12/12/09: You'd be forgiven for thinking that this is another archive shot, after the recent images of 1500 and 1534, but here is 47402 in its new guise as 'D1501' following repairs etc as listed in yesterdays news. Bogie painting has been completed since this photo was added. A white sticker warning of overhead electricity will be added in the centre of the lower green band on the front end, rather than beneath the corner of each cab window - the centre of the green band was the position that the first lot of Brush Type 4's had theirs located, see the recent images shown on this page of 1500 and 1534. Some more photo's of 1501 taken over the weekend can be found on Fotopic.

Sunday 13/12/09
11/03/64: The pioneer 47, D1500, stands at York shed as a Deltic passes by. Of course this and D1501 are now preserved, the latter (47402, and now devoid of Gateshead nameplates) has had its body overhaul and repaint into original two tone green livery completed and on Saturday it left East Lancs' Castlecroft shed. Finishing touches including bogie painting will be completed on this within the next week or so and 'D1501' will make its full working debut on 09/01/10 at the East Lancs Diesel Theme day.
In 2009 D1501 has received a lot of work, having a lot of new steelwork a lot of new steelwork around all cab doors both floor and door pillars following extensive rot. All of the steel gutters on the roof were replaced with aluminium ones and a lot of steelwork had to be replaced around them, most of the glass including windscreens were replaced and all windows had new rubbers, and the headcode blinds and mechanisms were overhauled (it'll be remembered that at least one end was stuck for a long time). Mechanically, only new brake blocks and traction motor brushes needing attention was all that was needed and the loco started first time after six months in the shed.
The loco now looks very tidy, especially compared to it's faded BR blue style last seen, and to add to the authenticity the headlights and of course the nameplates have been removed.

27/09/63: D1534 when new, I'll admit this is a great 'guess-the-location' shot (been a few years since we had one of those) - mainly because there is no record of where it was taken! Anyone recognise that field, pile of stone, the signal including a distant, or crossover layout?! Educated guesses welcome to sulzerpower@yahoo.co.uk . Anyway, this was later 47426, note the original roof details and the one lone 'danger overhead wires' sign near to where the headlight would be in later years, and also a temporary tail light attached.

31/05/03: It will not be the first time 47270 has worked a Pathfinder charter, 47270 was seen above at Wolverhampton working 1Z47 1455 Ironbridge-Crewe via Walsall return half of a mini charter that was hauled outwards by 66561. 47810 is on the left, seen at about 1615, not sure what 810 was working as the only gen posted here that day was; # 47736=1D89 Crewe-Holyhead # 47739=1G95/ 1D67/ 1G11/ 1D82 # 47784=1V61 Aberdeen-Penzance from Exeter-Plymouth # 47813=1C99 last night # 47826=1A17 etc # 47832=1A99 last night/ 1C22 1030 Paddington-Penzance

06/03/88: 47050 at Castle Cary on an engineers train, during a Sunday 'possession'. 050 carried large logo railfreight grey at the time, but unusually without black cab window surrounds and only part of the buffer beam painted red. It also has a white stripe below the roof line. Recorded no-heat passenger train workings involving 47/0s on this day involved 47019 1W13 0844 Waterloo-Weymouth from Basingstoke-Eastleigh and 47296 1H39 1520 Euston-Manchester Piccadilly from Stockport - an AC drag, 350 was also in use on these (Class 47 List March 1988 workings page).
47050 itself worked a few passenger trains during 1988, recorded workings being; 06/05/88 = 2C68 0702 Exeter-Penzance from Plymouth, 15/05/88 = 1A80 1825 Hereford-Paddington from Oxford, 19/05/88 = 2C20 1015 Bristol TM-Taunton and 2C69 1131 Taunton-Bristol TM, 20/05/88 = 1F75 1700 Oxford-Paddington, 09/07/88 = 1E35 1241 Poole-Leeds to Birmingham New Street, 29/07/88 = 1D43 0950 Euston-Holyhead from Rhyl, 30/07/88 = 1A41 0932 Llandudno-Euston to Crewe, 03/11/88 = 1A02 2245 Penzance-Paddington to Plymouth, 04/11/1988 = 2V13 1310 Waterloo-Exeter from Andover-Salisbury (according to the NB 1988 passenger workings page.

01/12/09: 47790 departs Workington ECS to the sidings to allow 37423 to cross to the northbound platform for the return working. 790 had worked the 1120 from Maryport to Workington, this being its first day in passenger service for almost 24 months.
Photo Copyright: Pip Dunn
790 (and 47792 - now 47804 with WCRC) were both withdrawn on 01/04/04, the day after the final EWS worked LHCS train in north wales (47750 with 1H44).
01/04/04 was also the first day since the 1960s that no locomotive hauled train was scheduled to be hauled by class 47s, although in the event there were two Liverpool-Eustons which were 47 hauled throughout vice electric following problems - which were the only two trains to commence their journies on the 1st as 47811 had worked 31/03/04's 1C99 from Paddington to Plymouth where it was replaced by a 57.
Sulzerpower.com's archives have 47790's last train (before DRS days) as 21/03/04's 1C86 14xx Euston-Carlisle from two miles north of Crewe-Crewe station, and 47792's last working as 792 was 30/03/04's 1H44 0638 Bangor-Manchester Piccadilly.
790's previous train was on 17/03/04 when it hauled 1F24 2000 Euston-Liverpool throughout (a bit further than the two miles of 21/03/04!)
In DRS times, 790's most recent passenger working before 01/12/09 had been 1Z47 0726 Kings Cross-Skipton from Finsbury Park on 15th December 2007, the return working saw 790 on the rear of 832 - they had been top'n'tail all day.
After that, on 17/12/07 47790 and 47802 (the latter had been at Wembley stabled) were allocated 5Z47 1255 Wembley-Carnforth, though 790 failed at Ledburn and the formation was dragged by an 0Z15 (EWS 66s???) to Bletchley/ then 47802 hauled the train forwards. 790 did not work again until the unknown test run previously mentioned at the end of November 2009.
