  • Here follows an update to several news items that you may have missed, and several not yet reported on here.
    VIRGIN
    Of the 32 ILRA 47s from last Summer, the following are now stored or awaiting conversion to a 57 (orange ones are for 57 conversions) 47742, 47769, 47827, 47845, 47849.
    A question mark currently hangs over 47807, today on 1M01 as far as Birmingham (dead in tow?) and then 1M35 to Derby, which may be its last ever working. Previously the last train it hauled was 1O14 1510 Liverpool-Poole on Tuesday 15/01/02.

    1O38/ 1M81 are now shown on seat reservation systems as being allocated to a Voyager, although currently still 47 hauled for the moment. Poole is expected to be wiped off the 47 network from the end of March and possibly even Bournemouth aswell.
    Other Mon-Sat trains that have been lost are 1O30/1M50 (Brighton), 1O09/1M14 (Bournemouth, but currently 47 hauled on Saturdays ‘til the end of March), 1N11/1O71/1M32 (Blackpool/Portsmouth), 1O40/1S76 (Brighton). Occasionally 1H28/1G56 (Birmingham/Manchester) are formed of a 220 unit(s).

    SCOTRAIL (Caledonian Sleepers):
    Currently 1A25 0420 Edinburgh-Aberdeen (Mon-Sat) and 1B16 2140 Aberdeen-Edinburgh (Sun-Fri) are allocated to be hauled by a Res 47, this will last until 67002 returns to service which could be at the end of February.
    Also 1S25 0420 Edinburgh-Inverness (Mon-Sat) and 1M16 2040 Inverness-Edinburgh (Sun-Fri) are hauled by a 67, and occasionally deputised by a 47 in poor weather (deep snow!)

    FIRST GREAT WESTERN:
    Currently with just 47781, 47813, 47830, and 47832 to choose from with 47811, and 47846 at Toton for various repairs, 47815 currently restricted to ECS workings at Paddington, and 47816 at Landore.
    47726 was also at Old Oak Common and may see use with FGW.
    Cardiff and Paddington train crews are still to be trained on the Class 180’s - which will cascade HST’s to replace the 47 workings. Drivers have been being trained for some time on these.
    180103 has managed to work one passenger train so far, no others having yet worked. The first trains to be worked by 180’s could include the 0948 Paddington-Hereford, and 0822 Cheltenham-Paddington, and should be worked by these by the start of this years summer timetable.
    This will lead to the end of 1A45 0820 Penzance-Paddington/ 1C50 1633 Paddington-Penzance which will become an HST turn, with other workings to follow.

    MIDLAND MAINLINE:
    On the positive side, Midland Mainline seem likely to be using a 47 hauled rake of mark2 carriages on a working into St Pancras and back each weekday from some time before the end of March (unconfirmed) until the end of the winter timetable when Virgin are releasing an HST set for Midland Mainline.

  • 47726 and 47781 are to be hired to First Great Western for an unknown length of time whilst 47811, 47816, and 47846 are repaired. They were hauled to Wembley with two Class 90's on 0O94, and had made it to Old Oak Common before the evening.
    47726 was hired to FGW last year for a short period, but only hauled one passenger train for them, whilst 47781 was originally one of the named Western region machines, as D1674 it was named 'SAMSON'.
  • Still unconfirmed is the actual location of 47816!!!
  • Going the other way was another of the original Western named locos, FGW's 47846 'THOR' which was dead in tow on Virgin's 1S87 behind 47822 to Birmingham. 846 is heading to Toton for a bogie change.
  • Due to a derailment at Wortley, 47785 dragged at least one GNER working from Leeds to Doncaster as the overhead equipment was turned off (see 'other workings').

  • As a result of this the other class 158 workings have now been converted to Class 220's.

  • 47785=Newcastle thunderbird.
  • Unfortunately, the last weekend of the north west drags was marred by several failures.
  • 47774 failed (loss of power – a common problem with 774) just as it left Liverpool with the 1510 Liverpool-Crewe. It reversed back into Liverpool where it was replaced by 47847 which had been intended to work the 1610 Liverpool-Crewe. 47774 later successfully hauled the 1910 Liverpool-Crewe and a return working.
  • 47757 also failed (details unknown).
  • 47722, known at the beginning of this year’s winter timetable for being one of the most unreliable 47s, was the third failure, on the 2057 Crewe-Preston. Fumes were pouring from the engine for most of the way from Crewe until the driver stopped it at Wilmslow. 47635 hauled the train forward from Wilmslow to Preston, (47635 is rumoured to be being withdrawn within the next month or two).
  • In the morning West Coast workings were being diverted between Nuneaton and Stafford via Birmingham, and were therefore dragged by 47’s.
    1F13 0730 Euston-Liverpool and 1P57 0830 Euston-Preston were both dragged throughout, routed Euston-Northampton-Nuneaton-BNS-Stafford etc.
    1G17 0735 Euston-Wolves did not run.
  • Most Nuneaton drag workings are unknown, but only ran until mid afternoon.
  • Also in the late afternoon, a body was found on the track in the Bolton area so trains were being diverted via Wigan and Newton-Le-Willows between Preston and Manchester. The only drag known to have gone that way is 47806 on 1M35, but several others may have done.
