  • 47292 is now stored, 47289 was at Warrington yard this morning, having been at Carlisle at the weekend.
  • 47854 worked 1A46 0919 Holyhead-Crewe only (this loco normally goes on to work 1O16 1530 Preston-Poole). The loco has either an AWS or DSD fault in one cab, and after working 1D88 to Holyhead last night was sent to the triangle at Valley (just outside Holyhead) where it was turned round so the cab with the fault wouldn’t be used on 1A46 this morning. 1O16’s loco was 47843.
  • 47854 was not the only loco turned on the Valley triangle, as this morning 47770 departed Holyhead with 1A23 when it was stopped by the driver due to a faulty windscreen wiper (the HST that should have worked this train had been taken out of service yesterday also with a faulty windscreen wiper!!!), and detached from the train and taken round the triangle before returning to the train and continuing around 50 minutes late.

  • On Saturdays from tomorrow (23rd) until the end of the winter timetable 1C12 0830 Paddington-Penzance is the 47 hauled working, and not 1C17 0930 Paddington-Penzance as it has been recently.
  • Also from tonight/tomorrow morning 57601 again takes over the ‘down’ sleeper – 1C99 2350 Paddington-Penzance at Plymouth on Friday night/Saturday mornings (as it had done from the start of the winter timetable until 05/01/02). The 57 should work this train from Plymouth and the ‘up’ 1A99 2100 Penzance-Paddington as far as Plymouth on Sunday nights until the end of the current winter timetable (01/06/02).
  • 47811 and 47846 believed to be going off hire from FGW in April. 47806 and 47814 are still the next Virgin 47s to be withdrawn (although have been for some time and have been overtaken by 47849, 47807 and 47822).
  • The Midland Mainline 47 working this week has unfortunately been subjected to poor timekeeping (despite the timings being revised) and 47703 being low on power. Hopefully the second week will be a lot better, as this train is still intended to be hauled through the summer.

  • 1P57 0830 Euston-Preston was an electric loco throughout.
  • 47790 was involved in two unusual incidents at Preston this afternoon. It had worked out of Glasgow along with 47744 today due to engineering work near Motherwell(?) to Carlisle and on to Preston. Unusually a class 87 (87008) was kept dead in tow from Glasgow on the train, and was then dragged over the Settle and Carlisle route (which is normally not permitted due to limited clearance between the pantograph and the tunnels on the route). On arrival at Preston 790 was detached, and another 87 was intended to be backed onto 87008 to propel it forward to Euston. Oddly the 87 was signalled into the platform before 47790 had been taken out, leaving 790 in the middle of a class 87 sandwich! The situation was quickly sorted.
    Later 1S90 arrived at Preston, which 47790 was to work forward, and before removing the class 90 from the train - 47790 had already been signalled into the platform! So 790 had to be taken out to allow the 90 to be removed. Two potentially dangerous incidents within a few hours of each other. Both incidents were probably caused by the sets being the wrong way round, the electric loco being at the opposite end of the train to what was expected.
  • 47812 and 47844 on Eastleigh depot this evening.
  • As usual on a Sunday, the FGW workings were diverted via Yeovil and the 'Mule'. 1C50 1405 Paddington-Penzance had been scheduled to stop at all stations between Yeovil Junction and Exeter Central today only (except Pinhoe and St James Halt) and was to be a HST as usual. Oddly 47813 worked the train - forming the first loco hauled stopping service between Yeovil and Exeter since 1993!!!

  • Rather than an ILRA 47, 1V50 was hauled by two Res 47s, 47744 from Carlisle-Preston, then 47776 from Preston-Penzance. 47744 ran round the train at Preston (train reverses there after working over the Settle and Carlisle line) and was attached to the other end. It was soon removed as 47776 had already been allocated to work the train. This was one of several errors made by the Preston signalling team this weekend (see Sunday!)   • The only Freightliner 47 still carrying RfD livery, 47287 this weekend worked several trains for Virgin after 47822 was failed with a fault (believed to be low power, not a DSD fault as previously stated) on 1O09 0815 Manchester-Bournemouth at Southampton on Saturday.
    47287 had been intended for withdrawl from service on Friday, allocated to work 4K50 Lawley Street-Crewe before being switched off, but 287 was called to rescue 57003 on 4M55 1015 Millbrook-Lawley Street which had failed at Hatton Loop.
    47287 continued the duty working 4O17 1546 Lawley Street-Southampton.

    The following day (Saturday) 47287 worked:
    1M14 1418 Bournemouth-Manchester from Southampton to BNS (47822 on the rear providing ETH),
    1V99 2115 BNS-Paddington (47822 dead in tow, providing ETH).
    Then on Sunday worked:
    1S52 0912 Paddington-Edinburgh as far as Preston, with 47840 dead in tow to BNS, then 287 ran round the train and had 47851 in tow providing ETH as far as Preston.

    47759 hauled the train forward on its own to Carlisle via the S+C, where an 86 took over.

    47287 ran light engine from Preston to Crewe Basford Hall to be withdrawn. It was to have run light from Manchester/Longsight to Basford Hall on Saturday after working 1M14 through to Manchester. Due to flooding between Wolverhampton and Stafford 1M14 was cancelled at Birmingham and formed 1V99 from there.
