Note, the following are the original postings for Weds 30/10/02 and Thurs 31/10/02 - there had been no news update since 24/10 up to that point. Comments originally posted here at the time have remained here, it was a difficult time and the website was mostly a thankless chore and I needed a break... Sorry if anyone was offended by any of the comments at the time, and to all those whose gen was never used, I'm still adding bits occasionally, seven and a half years later!
It was a turning point, for the better, as the pressures of dealing with hours of editing every day were lifted. As the original type said, it was very much 'back to square one' and a case of rebuilding a following for the website and gave me chance to sort out positive changes in my personal life.

It will be noted below there are comments about a charter company refusing to use 47s as they cannot sell a coach, never mind a train. At the time Kevin Melia and myself were in talks to begin Compass Tours, and happily we ran two class 47 hauled tours in 2003 and four in 2004 with the West Coast Railway Company.

the original post for WEDNESDAY 30/10/02

Apologies for the following. If its been a long day for you don’t bother reading it:

  • Where have the updates been??? Well the usual excuses apply of course, lack of spare time etc etc, after all I don’t get paid for this, in fact I have to pay for it.
Anyway I have been asked to give a mention to the following new email group (well he asked me last Monday but 8 days late is better than nothing), called CrankRanters it surprisingly enough involves cranks ranting, often amusing to read.

Anyway whilst I was taking a look through some of the emails sent I noticed the following text on one of them (tour company name will not be mentioned):

      “Saw this posted on the net. Some eejut had asked xxxxx if they had any plans to run any Heritage Class 47 tours, the quoted reply follows;
"We have no plans to use the 'heritage' 47's at present as we believe that such a tour would be completely unsellable over the next year or so. I doubt we could sell a coach, let alone a full train. Given the number of very major problems we have had with 47's failing on us, we are at present looking at ways of avoiding using Class 47's at all." End of quote.
Hmm, bizarre how many other tour groups fill carriages with enthusiasts on 47 tours, and fill the rest with normal people as well.

And the same tour company (mentioned indirectly above) recently sent out a message with their latest tour brochure saying that I will be “removed” from their mailing list as I haven’t travelled on their tours lately. They do say if I send them money I can carry on receiving the brochures.
Fair enough, this does stop time wasters but I was intending to add a section to this site regarding 47 hauled charters, but now I wont be aware of any of their tours (even though it sounds as if they wont be 47 hauled anyway!!!)

  • And to another story, a magazine editor (who I did give permission to use bits of information to help the magazine a while ago, as I enjoy being able to help people) has annoyed me by completely copying the comprehensive table regarding the current North West Drags page (which took a lot of time and effort to sort out, both this year and last year), and to rub salt into the wounds has then more or less copied and pasted several parts of my introductory text as well (this text was on the ‘drags’ page last year also).
The white text below is copied from my page, and the yellow text is the similar paragraphs quoted in the magazine, with the bits that are exactly the same as mine in orange text.
“....are again being dragged away from the West Coast Main Line between Crewe and Liverpool or Preston.”

“The trains are ‘dragged’....between Crewe and Liverpool or Preston.”

“Preston-Crewe workings are diverted via Styal or Stockport to Manchester Piccadilly, to Bolton and onto Preston. Liverpool workings are diverted via Styal or Stockport to Manchester Piccadilly, then via Newton-Le-Willows (Chat Moss) to Liverpool.”

“Preston-Crewe workings are diverted via Styal or Stockport to Manchester Piccadilly, and then continue via Bolton to Preston. Liverpool workings are diverted via Styal or Stockport to Manchester Piccadilly, then via Chat Moss.”

The magazine then continues with a list of all the workings from Sunday 29th September, which were very kindly sent to me by a regular contributor who had taken a lot of his time to help me post the correct information on here, and as usual neither he, nor myself or any other contributors to this site ever receive a thanks in the magazine.
    Why do we bother?

To the people who have contributed and helped me keep the site (almost) up to date, took moments of their spare time to email me, and people who congratulated me on the site:
Thanks, your comments and information were heartening and invaluable at the time.

To the people who took the site for granted:
Well.....thanks for coming but you'll have to look elsewhere now.

Thanks for your attention, and goodnight.

the original post for THURSDAY 31/10/02

    Well, back to square one:

  • Not quite actually, to go back to the start I'd be typing this now on the original Expage site (which was at www.expage.com/class47list
  • I am no longer paying for the www.class47list.co.uk site and updates on events will continue at times on here. If you click on the class47list.co.uk link above you will see a blank page with the title "The Class 47's have gone.....like this site!!", a pun from the man who gave me the chance to run a professional site which I must thank him hugely for. The original "here one day, gone the next" slogan was thought up for both the 47's and this site as I struggled on with the updates.
  • Also yesterday I said "....the people who took the site for granted", I must apologise to some who were offended by this as some could only take this site for granted, either for personal or geographical reasons.

  • News:
Apparently 1G95/1D67/1G11/1D82 may be hauled very shortly if a 47 is available, along with 1H44/1D45. How much truth is in this rumour???
  • 47773 worked 1Y46 1121 Victoria-Folkestone and was dead on the rear of 1Y44 1448 Folkestone to Victoria (hauled by 37375).
  • 47736 arrived from the March direction at 1350hrs on a short mixed engineers train. It dumped the wagons in the yard and retired to the shed for a drink.
Thanks to Luke Harmer for the information, and Forghorn and Jon Cowe for other information.
