  • 47806 is again working for Virgin after its day-long hire to FGW. It was placed on the back of the 1A99 FGW sleeper last night from Bristol-Paddington, and its other workings from yesterday for FGW are still unconfirmed.
  • 47780 has been this weeks Voyager thunderbird at York (since at least Wednesday). This loco did have black headcodes boxes, but has had its yellow ends repainted, which unfortunately meant the loss of the black headcodes.

  • As predicted yesterday, 47810s hire to FGW is over, today it is allocated to work Virgins 1S87 1418 Paddington-BNS.
  • 1O09/ 1M14=HST.
  • Due to the failure of 47839 prior to working light to Blackpool for 1O71 this morning, 1N11 0647 Preston-Blackpool was cancelled.
    1O71 began (up to 60m late) from Preston with 47769 which had been allocated to 1V50 1131 Preston-Penzance.
    47854 was called upon to work 1V50 (854 had been allocated to 1O16 1530 Preston-Poole).
    This left 1O16, which was covered by 47712.
  • Further to the changes that the Blackpool working caused, there was misery for the passengers who travelled on 1O71 and 1M32 1440 Portsmouth-Blackpool as this set was formed of the most bizarre set of carriages ever noted!
    The 47 hauled workings are normally SEVEN carriages, but due to stock shortages, as few as FOUR carriages on sets are seen regularly. The 1O71 set provided a twist to the four carriage formation, by providing TWO standard class carriages at the Blackpool end (5930 and 5822), next up was the brake van (9524), then next to the brake van was the Club Class/Buffet carriage (1254) at the Portsmouth end. To add further to the chaos caused by such an unusual formation, the standard class coach at the rear of 1O71/front of 1M32 (5930) was locked out of use! which left the standard class customers with just ONE and a half carriages for their use, compared to the usual FIVE and a half!
    If anyone ever notes any carriage sets which are as/ more unusual than this then please do email me!

  • Virgins 47810 had been allocated to work 1C56 1633 Paddington-Penzance, but this was worked by 47813 which had not been in service since last Wednesday (20/06/01).
  • 47816, which has been on exam at Landore for a while, could be back in service shortly, noted running light engine eastbound through Cardiff at 1710 today.
  • With the return of 813 and 816 to service, the services of 47810 should no longer be required to FGW, maybe this will work one of the Virgin services back out of Paddington tomorrow?

  • HST = 0630 Plymouth-Paddington, 1233 Paddington-Exeter, 1730 Exeter-Paddington, 2033 Paddington-Plymouth.
  • Thought to be due to a bridge being hit between Bolton and Preston, 1N11 0647 Preston-Blackpool was cancelled, therefore 1O71 started at Preston.
  • 47798 worked the 1V40 parcels working to Plymouth last night, then ECS on 5C40 to St Blazey, today=see above.
  • 1V35 0605 Derby-Plymouth was top'n'tailed by 47818 (leading from Derby) and 47726 at the rear with a Serco Railtest track recording coach. The train was noted at Starcross with 47726 leading (presumably the whole set had reversed as 47818 was now at the rear), and running 55 minutes late! The formation was due to return on 1M40 1150 Plymouth-BNS, 47818 hauled the train through to Liverpool, the set was observed at Stafford without the Railtest coach and no sign of 47726.
  • 47806 had been allocated to 1O38 1406 BNS-Bournemouth/ 1M81 1818 Bournemouth-BNS, but 1O38 was seen at Goring hauled by an unidentified Fragonset 47, now thought to be 47701.

  • First Great Western were hoping to have finished using Class 47s on long distance daytime services to the West Country by June, or July when they would be replaced by HSTs (the HSTs coming from London-Wales services of which many would be taken over by new Class 180 DMUs), but due to ongoing negotiations between FGW and the RMT, the Class 180s are likely to be further delayed going into service, and the 47s may even last towards the end of the Summer timetable!
  • Even after the Summer timetable finishes, Class 47s will still be in use with FGW on sleeper services. Due to the success of 57601 (which may be painted FGW green eventually), more of the Class 47s should be converted to Class 57s, with 47846 the likely loco to become 57602.

  • With the Voyagers almost upon us, and the fact that we have just over three months Class 47 operation (to the extent that we currently know it) before us, it is time to speculate which workings will lose the Class 47s and mark 2 coaching stock first.
    Richard Boyd recently wrote to Virgin Trains to enquire if there was any definite plan as to when individual workings would go over to Voyager haulage.
    The reply stated that it was likely to be a “very ad-hoc situation”, but that it is “unlikely” that any 47s would lose any diagrams before the Winter timetable commences in September.
    From September the plan appears to be to phase out services that are hauled by Class 47s throughout, candidates for this being 1M01/1O14 (Poole-Liverpool-Poole), 1N11/1O71/1M32 (Preston-Blackpool-Portsmouth-Blackpool) which have been rumoured to be the first to go for several months. Other likely services to ‘go’ first could be the Newcastle diagram (1V39/1E33/1V67), the Manchester-Brighton (1O30/1M50), and the Manchester-Bournemouth Pines Express (1O09/1M14).
    Services that use Class 86s and change to Class 47s at Preston or Birmingham are likely to be some of the last remaining Class 47 hauled trains to operate for Virgin into 2002, but by May 2002 “even the Class 86 diagrams should have gone over to Voyagers”.
    It is possible however, that a few loco hauled Virgin services will remain for the Summer 2002 timetable, although Class 47s are unlikely to remain at that time.

  • Further to the photo of 47848 at Worcester yesterday (photo below), the train was diverted there as the leading coach (the brake vehicle) had developed a small fire beneath it. The local fire brigade attended the scene and the vehicle was removed. Relief traincrew arrived on 1V57 0915 Aberdeen-Plymouth HST which was also diverted via Worcester, to drop off the traincrew. 47848 departed with the set at around 1800 (the working is the 1150 from Plymouth), and went to Crewe for another brake vehicle to be added to the set.
  • 47793 and 47786 (top'n'tail) arrived at Derby at 1210 today on a Serco test train.

  • 47832 failed before starting with 1A78, so 47849 off the rear of 1V26 dragged it to Exeter (in service). 57601 was sent from Laira to contiue the train, but 47832 got going before 57601 arrived, and continued to Paddington alone.

Why? 47810, the most recent repaint into Virgin livery hauled it from Bournemouth, but failed at Didcot with an AWS fault. 58020 rescued it and was to work to BNS, but due to a loss of power on the 58, 47810 pushed it, presumably all the way to BNS. There, 47840 was allocated to work to Preston where 37427 was attached to the front, working to Edinburgh! FOUR different locos (and TWO which dont normally haul passenger trains) on the same train in the same day!
    47810s first appearance in service in Virgin livery was on Saturday 02/06/01, working 0910 Liverpool-Weymouth.

  • 47742 would’ve been allocated to 1S76 0920 Brighton-Poole, but this failed after rescuing 47814 (which also failed) on yesterdays 1O40. Todays 1S76 is therefore beginning at Reading, with 47741.
  • 47817 is allocated to 1V50 1131 Preston-Penzance, but this is also rumoured to be worked by 47746. This didnt happen, and 47746 rescued a Euston-Glasgow working instead (details anyone?)
  • It seems Virgin Cross Country are extremely short on mark 2 carriages, currently several sets only conveying FOUR carriages instead of the usual SEVEN. A full page detailing some of the current set formations was due to be added this evening, but due to updating the FGW timing page, this will now be added on Saturday.
  • One service to suffer badly from the lack of coaching stock is the Blackpool working, 1N11 0647 Preston-Blackpool/ 1O71 0735 Blackpool-Portsmouth/ 1M32 1440 Portsmouth-Blackpool/ 1M04 2210 Preston-Manchester. This has been worked since Tuesday by 158748.
    Would it not be possible for Virgin West Coast to lend the Cross Country routes some sets of carriages?
    How long do the passengers have to put up with trains they cant even get onto due to overcrowding?
