  • 1S87 1418 Paddington-Birmingham, 1H28 1516 Birmingham International-Manchester, and 1V99 1909 Manchester-Paddington were unknown this morning.
  • After hauling a normally HST working to Plymouth on Sunday, 47712 was to work 1A88 1840 Plymouth-Paddington, and 1C99 2351 Paddington-Penzance tonight. It was seen stabled at Laira earlier today. The Fragonset loco that FGW were hiring: 47701 would have worked 1A88, as it worked 1C44 to Plymouth earlier, so 712 is a direct swap for 701.
  • 47739 seen at BNS at 20:00.
  • 47761 worked through to Paddington on 1V98 1810 Liverpool-Paddington last night, and today is returning on 1M32 0932 Reading-Manchester.
  • 47829 did not haul 1V67 1840 Newcastle-Bristol as booked. Instead, this was formed of an HST set with 43063 and 43092. 47829 presumably worked its train to Bristol as an empty stock working, as it was at Bristol for Wednesday morning!

  • 47742 has had its front ends repainted, presumably at Eastleigh at the weekend, but unfortunately this appears to have been done rather hastily.
  • Due to the failure of 47769 at Didcot on 1O16, the loco working Old Oak Common empty coaching stock (ECS) workings (47722) rescued it. This left no ECS loco for Virgin, so 60016 was hauling these between Paddington and Old Oak Common in the evening!

      Saturday 28/07/01 
  • 47635 returned from Inverness on 1M16 2040 Inverness-Edinburgh last night, and was then to move to Perth to become the thunderbird loco there.
  • 47792 took over from 47635 this morning to work 1S25 0420 Edinburgh-Inverness (792 returned to service on Friday morning after repairs to its wheelsets). 47792 only made it to Newtonmore before failing (seized traction motor?), and then continuing to Kingussie at 10mph, where 47792 was left, and the train worked forward by 37411(!)
    47635 should now work 1M16 2040 Inverness-Edinburgh on Sunday night.
  • 47793 came from Rugby to haul 1O10 1106 BNS-Weymouth from Birmingham International after 47847 failed. The return 1M81 1715 Weymouth-Manchester was formed of an HST set, from Bournemouth (where 47793 had worked 1M81 to!)
  • 47831 should have hauled 1M27 1918 Bournemouth-Wolverhampton, but the set for this was terminated at Winchester and sent to Eastleigh (empty) on the previous working, 1O38 (see above), so 1M27 was hauled by 47793 on the set that had terminated at Bournemouth, complete with 47847 dead in tow still!

  • 47635 made a rare appearance on a passenger train in Scotland this morning by working 1S25 0420 Edinburgh-Inverness, due to 47758 needing an exam, and no other loco being available at Millerhill! 47635 ran light engine from Motherwell to Millerhill last night.
  • 47853 arrived at Birmingham at 1322 dragging an HST set with 43062 and 43068 on 1S85 0720 Plymouth-Aberdeen, 47853 had worked from Lickey bank, and later worked 1O38/1M81 (see above) as allocated.
  • Another HST set to fail on Lickey bank, on 1E39 1524 Swansea-Newcastle was to be rescued by 47750, which hauled it as far as Birmingham New Street.
  • 47703 on 1S93 1535 Bristol-Preston ran via Warrington and the West Coast main line rather than via Manchester due to late running.

  • Since the Scotrail sleeper to Aberdeen was converted to Class 67 operation, it has been worked by EWS drivers. The Inverness sleeper is not however, but as from the winter timetable, it is reported to be being worked by EWS drivers, which may mean 67s take over the route.
    The only problem would be a shortage of 67s, EWS struggled to find one for the Aberdeen sleeper when it went over to Class 67 haulage. Several 67s could be released by replacing the Norwich postal workings with 86s(!)
  • 47703 is being dragged to Plymouth on 1V35 today (see 47827), maybe as a replacement for 47701 which is still on hire to First Great Western?
  • The 47 to be used on Anglia's top'n'tail working will be their thunderbird (not as previously said), which should be 47757.
  • 1A99 2200 Penzance-Paddington is tonight starting at Exeter due to an emergency engineers possession between Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth to remove a defective rail from Parsons Tunnel near Teignmouth tonight. The ECS for 1A99 passed through Starcross at 21:50 heading towards Exeter behind 47846.
    1C99 2350 Paddington-Penzance will run through to Penzance but will be held at Dawlish Warren until 06:00!

  • Anglia Railways (perhaps unfortunately) have decided they do not wish to use their 47 thunderbird on Thursday and Friday for the following top'n'tail loco hauled trains which will operate:

  • Reported last week was the news that 1O09/1M14 and 1O30/1M50 were to go over to Voyager operation as from tomorrow. It is thought that this is now very unlikely to happen, but several Voyager workings should still begin on Monday, as advertised in the Virgin timetables.
  • Next Thursday and Friday (26-27/07/01), a Norwich-Lowestoft working will be hauled by a Res Class 47, and the Norwich thunderbird (if available) working top’n’tail.
  • 47839 worked 1A23 0546 Holyhead-Euston as far as Crewe this morning, using the hauled set which normally works 1A46 0919 Holyhead-Euston. 1A46 was an HST, dragged by 47737, which later worked 1O16 1530 Preston-Poole.
  • 1M56 was hauled by a Class 86 from Birmingham today, due to 47722 from this working 1O38 rather than 47829 (see below).
  • An unknown FGW 47 worked an additonal working today, the 1635 Exeter-Paddington (also calling at Tiverton, Taunton, Castle Cary, Westbury, Pewsey, Newbury and Reading). This was the set that should have worked 1A83 1730 Exeter-Paddington (this was covered by an HST which started at Plymouth).

  • 47741 was involved in a fatality at Ivybridge today, whilst working 1V45 (the 11:00 from Birmingham to Plymouth). As a result, 1E61 15:50 Plymouth-Leeds was cancelled.
    47741 arrived at Plymouth at 16:15, and was dragged (with the coaching stock) by 08669 to Laira.
    The above means a loco may not currently be available for 1V39 (06:40 York-Bristol) for tomorrow morning, and that 47741 may work a train from Plymouth tomorrow.
  • To get the failed 47742 from Brighton to Eastleigh, it was hauled dead by 47840 from Brighton to Birmingham on 1S76, then it was hauled on 1O38 by 47806 from Birmingham to Bournemouth. Also on 1O38 (at the rear) was 47703, which was to work the return 1M81 working.
  • 47770 still at BNS, in the evening.
  • Further to the news from Saturday, 1V98 and 1V99 were routed via the WCML, but terminated at Reading, rather than Euston. Bus connections were provided at Coventry for passengers to travel to Leamington Spa, Banbury and Oxford.

  • 1A45 0820 Penzance-Paddington was cancelled (had been allocated to 47701).
  • Two Res 47s spent the night at Holyhead, 47727 returned last night after its workings yesterday working 1D89 2118 Crewe-Holyhead. The other was 47734, which worked 1D88 (see yesterdays news).
    47734 is returning on 1A46 today, this diagram continues with 1O16 1530 Preston-Poole, the loco for this is currently unknown.
  • Further to the news on 47844s failure at Bournemouth on Saturday, it can now be confirmed the loco suffered a fire caused by the main generator on arrival at Bournemouth. 47807 hauled 47844 to Eastleigh as 0Y77 1700 from Bournemouth-Eastleigh.
  • Due to an incident at Tackley, involving a Thames Trains turbo and a herd of cows, many services were severely disrupted on Saturday night. Below is a summary of what happened:
  • 47817 on 1M32 1440 Portsmouth-Blackpool departed from Oxford on time (16:36), but due to the above incident blocking the line, it was dragged back to Oxford by 47840 which had been working 1M50 1418 Brighton-MP (1M50 is normally due to depart Oxford at 17:01).
  • 1M50 was then cancelled at Oxford, the passengers from this being transferred to 1M32, which departed Oxford 110 minutes late. 1M32 was routed via Worcester, and then terminated at Birmingham!
  • The following 47s left Oxford after this. 47814 1O40 (165 minutes late), 47703 1O14 (155 minutes late), 47810 1O97 (45 minutes late), 47812 1M27 (still at Oxford 21:55), and 1M81 1715 Weymouth-MP was due at 22:00 (approximately 95 minutes late).
  • 47840 and stock were still at Oxford north loop at 22:00.
  • 1M14 1418 Bournemouth-MP did not appear at Oxford (terminated at Didcot).
    1O16 Glasgow-Poole (1530 from Preston) is believed to have been diverted via the West Coast Main Line.
    1V98 (47806, 47712 dead at the rear) and 1V99 (47741) were diverted via the WCML to Reading, rather than Paddington!
  • The fire on 47844 at Bournemouth left 1M14 1418 Bournemouth-MP without a loco. 47848 eventually hauled this from Bournemouth, departing 132 minutes late! As mentioned above, 1M14 only managed to get as far as Didcot due to the incident involving the cows on the line. It then worked back ECS as 5M14 to Bournemouth depot.
  • 47703 was working 1O14 1706 BNS-Poole, but departing from Reading suffered with power trouble, only managing to reach a maximum speed of 15mph, eventually arriving at Bournemouth (where it was terminated) 290 minutes late, also delayed due to the above incident.
  • 47848 from 1M14 dragged 47703 and its set to Bournemouth depot.

  • 47701 = 1C99 2357 Paddington-Penzance to Truro last night, failed with low power. Stabled at Penzance during the afternoon.

  • 47815=Laira. 47736 was the Preston thunderbird.
  • The Pines Express 1O09 0819 MP-Bournemouth was today hauled by 47844, which failed upon arrival at Bournemouth (details below). The return 1M14 1418 Bournemouth-MP working was worked by an unknown loco at least an hour late (and may have even been cancelled).
  • A Thames Turbo unit hit cows in the Heyford or Tackley area towards the end of the day and caused many problems that can be seen in the workings above. Further the above, 1V98 and 1V99 were not seen, 1V99 ran via the WCML. 47840 was sat in Oxford north loop still at 2155 with stock from 1M50. 1O16 was also not seen at Oxford during the evening.
  • 57601 worked 5C50 1923 Exeter-Penzance last night, so must have worked 1C50 from Paddington. The loco had previously been on exam at Old Oak Common.

  • Most carriage sets on Virgin Cross Country Class 47 hauled trains have been observed with six or seven carriages this week (many have been out of service due to the need to reprofile the wheels/tyres).   • 47781 had an AWS fault whilst working this mornings 1S25 0420 Edinburgh-Inverness, and Inverness depot were unable to test and repair it. Due to the lack of a Perth thunderbird (a loco should be based here daily, but very rarely is), tonights 1M16 2040 Inverness-Edinburgh sleeper is to be hauled by 66097 (with 47781 dead in tow). The 66 recently hauled the Freightliner Phoenix charter, back in May.
  • The four Virgin 47s which were to be handed back to EWS are now believed to be on spot hire, to Virgin when required (and possibly allocated to Eastleigh depot for maintenance).
  • 1O09/ 1M14 (the Manchester-Bournemouth-Manchester 'Pines Express), and 1O30/ 1M50 (Manchester-Brighton-Manchester) are to be worked by Voyagers from July 21st. It was previously thought that the 47s would remain on these diagrams until the end of the summer.

  • The 12:30 Penzance-Paddington was hauled by an unconfirmed FGW 47, rather than the usual HST, the stock from this then formed the 1233 from Paddington on Monday. An HST worked the 1403 Paddington-Penzance vice LHCS.
  • 47725 was named Bristol Barton Hill at a private staff event at the depot yesterday, which explains the sighting of it last week with its names covered over. Its still carries Res livery.
  • 47760 allocated to 1C99 2357 Paddington-Penzance, but did not work it. 47830 hauled 1C99. 47760 worked the ECS for 1C99 from Old Oak Common to Paddington.

    47725 was dragged through Birmingham with D172, 90037 and coaching stock. 725 'The Railway Mission' had its nameplates covered over with binliners. Maybe it could be about to be renamed or rededicated with its current name?
    47749 was this weeks Anglia thunderbird, but was changed today to 47793, a former Stratford based loco as 47579.
    47770 seen at Burton On Trent, shunting steel wagons in the sidings there.
    47785 worked the 6L69 Biggleswade-Bow Plasmor Concrete blocks train this morning, then the ECS from 1D43 1610 Kings Cross-Leeds from Peterborough to New England yard, after 91003 caught fire.
    Further to the Anglia Trains Class 47 hauled timings to Great Yarmouth mentioned further down this page, the same loco will also work the 10:04 Great Yarmouth-London Liverpool Street as far as Norwich (Saturdays only) where a Class 86 will take over. This working should also see an Anglia 86 towed dead to the non-electrified Great Yarmouth terminus!
    Although Class 67s are passed to work on the route to Great Yarmouth, Anglia will use their own drivers on the working, who are not trained to drive 67s.
    A Freightliner 47 will not work the train either, as these obviously do not have Electric Train Supply, which is needed to power the central door locking on the mark2 carriages used by Anglia.

    47847 hauled 1V39 0640 York-BTM this morning, with 47839 dead at the rear. 47839 had been rescued yesterday on 1E61 after failing at Bromsgrove.
    47840 hauled a rake of HST carriages and three barrier vehicles from Longsight, working as 5Z77 1347 Longsight-Laira. The set was one of the three West Coast HST sets.

     As can be seen from the allocations below, 47769 is not on hire to Freightliner (today worked 1N11, then failed prior to working 1V50), and the other three (722/ 741/ 742) reported yesterday as likely to be returning to EWS are thought to be remaining with Virgin for a while longer (although that could be a week, a month or maybe longer!)
    The Anglia diagram reported yesterday is confirmed as operating from the date mentioned.

    The first workings to be losing their Class 47 haulage first, as reported last month are still to be 1O30/1M50, 1O71/1M32, and 1O09/1M14 (currently an HST anyway!) Although 1V39/1E33/1V67 was thought to be going first aswell, but is now said to be one of the last 47 hauled services that will remain until the end!

    47822 worked 1E33 from BNS yesterday (after 47844 was removed due to overheating) and then 1V67 1840 Newcastle-BNS and therefore did not work 1O38.

    47839 failed today at Bromsgrove on 1E61.
    47844 is to be the next 47 converted to a Class 57 fitted with ETH (57/6), probably not until after the winter timetable has begun. 47814 and 47845 will follow.

     Rumoured currently is the return of 47722, 47741, 47742, and 47769 (which are all hired to the ILRA pool at the moment) to EWS who own them this coming weekend.
    (Ammended version of 47769s news!) Of the above four locos, 47769 is reported to be on hire to Freightliner until 30th July, and has worked 4L78 and 4O09 today, BUT worked 1M32 1440 Portsmouth-Blackpool. If the loco is indeed still on hire to Freightliner, then it would be presumed the loco would work 1O71 back to Portsmouth, possibly tomorrow (Wednesday).
    47851 currently out of service with fire damage, also rumoured that it could be going to EWS!
    47853 has been out of service since it worked 1O16 on 21st June 2001. It is now at Toton for repaint into its original XP64 blue livery.
