47316 and 47813 were intended to haul the Lowestoft trains this morning, but due to a coupler fault on 818, 813 was used on 1G49 to London and the morning Lowestoft (1G70, 1005 ex Norwich) service was worked by two class 170’s.

47703 failed yesterday at Fareham while attempting to work 1Z86 1032 Victoria-Portsmouth Harbour which it was intended to work from Fareham. 47703 was today seen being dragged by 33103 travelling east near Woking at around 1220.
47769 worked on the East Lancs again today (workings listed above), following the failure of a steam loco.
47769 also undertook some test running on Monday evening and should be working on the ELR this Saturday 31st July vice 47402.
47634 had been moved under cover at Saltley by Tuesday morning.

News:
Theres a possibility on Thurs and Fri that just the 1005 ex Norwich to Lowestoft and the 1756 retuun will be hauled, the other two trains being hauled by class 170's.
The second mystery pic displayed earlier on Tuesday was 47839 at the eastern end of Manchester Airport platform 1, about to become the one and only loco to ever haul a passenger train over the south curve at leading from the Airport to Styal. 839 had hauled 1S45 0556 Manchester Airport-Edinburgh in the morning on this, Monday 19th November 2001, and returned dead on rear 1M04 1857 Edinburgh-Birmingham New St as far as the Airport, where the train reversed utilising 839 again to Birmingham.
The service was booked for a 158 but became a Voyager permanently just 10 days later.
The service had been loco hauled in the past between Airport and Edinburgh, but 1M04 had extended to BNS from the Airport from the start of the Winter 2001/2 timetable.
Other incorrect guesses were coincidentally in the same city, stating this as Manchester Victoria, or Old Trafford.

News:
47828 failed with this mornings 1A13 0520 Holyhead-Euston, the loco’s fire bottles automatically set off before arriving at Rhyl and the engine shut itself down. 66029 was working a Penmaenmawr bound freight and was removed from its train to clear 828 and stock from the ‘up’ platform, dragging it to Holywell. Delays at Rhyl were minimised and the rescue was very efficient!
Following my reports of dreadful (in the bad sense of the word) timekeeping of the Euston-Holyhead services, usually caused by failures of electric loco’s or Pendolino’s on the WCML or poor planning at Crewe during shunting – I noticed on Ian Bowlands Photographic website the following quote:
"Over the past two weeks I have set out to photograph about a dozen Virgin trains on the Holyhead-London-Holyhead services and not one, not a single one, has been anywhere near on time! Now I fully appreciate that the railway industry has no obligation to me as a photographer but what about passengers? Is there no obligation there either? - it would appear not!"
I think this sums up most peoples opinion of the service, especially normal passengers. But lets not forget that when the new trains start working it’ll be much better apparently.
In recent weeks several cancellations have occurred of the north Wales services, but only this mornings failure of 47828 can be blamed on 47’s. 1D87 today was around half an hour late from Crewe due to 47810 having returned from Holywell (between Prestatyn and Crewe) after collecting 47828. 1A77 returned departing Holyhead 12 minutes late, being further delayed en-route by its tail lamp having fallen off (unbelievably Holyhead also have a tail lamp shortage since the Arriva loco hauled services have ceased!!!), sheep on the line east of Gaerwen, and police being called to the train at Abergele!
One of the Paignton addidtionals, 1V19 the 0941 from Preston was failed due to what was thought to be an ETS fault on the 67, so 851 was backed on. This too couldnt power the ETS on the stock so the train ran ECS with 851 to Warrington where it was replaced by 67001. On arrival at BNS 67001 continued in passenger service to Paington.
47830 was failed at BNS on a Nuneaton drag as it couldnt keep air levels up on the train. A 57 dragged it to Nuneaton, and after Nuneaton the 87 which worked the train forward failed as well! 830 was also allocated to:
1G44 0004 Nuneaton-Wolves/ 5G44 0104 Wolves-Oxley tonight.
Thursday and Fridays additional top'n'tail services to Lowestoft for the air show are:

1A49 0920 Holyhead-Euston was cancelled as far as Crewe (began with an 87 from there) due to 1D89 being cancelled yesterday night with an axle fault on the coaching stock, it didn’t arrive into Crewe until 2337.

Note the diagram worked by 47303 today is expected to be worked by 47's until September 5th when the Ipswich tunnel blockade is over.
575 is thought to be at Barrow Hill rather than Crewe. Still not 100% confirmed whether it has been purchased by Riviera although this is widely believed as true.
More news on that ECS working received from yesterday, on arrival at Barrow Hill 47853 was started and hauled the train towards the Springwell Branch, stopping part way down to detach 47805. 37214 was used to haul 47575 into the depot, before 805 ran towards the branch and was attached to 47839 and stock, departing at 1920 and gaining access to the main line at 1924. The trains booked time at Barrow Hill was 1501-1551.
47769 is still at Bury, and has not yet been fitted with TPWS.

News:
47145 was seen leading three mark 2 carriages (one in Virgin livery and two in Intercity livery) through platform 13 at Manchester Piccadilly at 1245 today, 709 was on the rear – the set having come from Oxley via Warrington to Longsight.
Yesterday’s news has received a brief update. Note 47810 and 47840 are confirmed as working 1D89 and 1D88 respectively last night, which was the opposite of what was allocated.

57301 on the 1D87/1A77 had somebody filming from the second mans seat in the driving cab, and other crew members in the loco's back cab.
Lateness of 1D87 now confirmed further to the earlier comments, and yesterdays notes about loss of time on the West Coast Main Line, 1D87 today was nine minutes late into Crewe, 19m late out, 23m late arriving at Holyhead. 1A77 left 10m late, 11m late into Crewe.
The filming is now known to have been for a recently launched DVD magazine series.
Starting today, NRM based 4472 'Flying Scotsman' began a summer service to Scarborough, echoing steam services to there in recent years.
On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between today (20th July) and 31st August 2004 the loco works the 1205 York-Scarborough/ 1505 Scarborough-York/ 1810 York-Scarborough/ 2020 Scarborough-York.
Why is this relevant? Well, NRM's 47798 is to be used as a standby loco to rescue 4472 in the event of failure, although Carnforth based 45407 will work instead of 4472 if a major failure on 'Flying Scotsman' occurs.

Despite being at Carlisle yesterday (as reported then), 47841 was at Polmadie today, joined by 47839 and 47853 from Riviera, thought to have done a 6Z17 service to there on Friday.
Note that the late Sunday trains did not run as they were allocated to do, and a 57 worked the 2045 from Crewe to Liverpool - the only GM machine to work on the drags all day.
Note the delays on the Holyhead services in the evening, this seems to be a regular occurence, usually caused by delays south of Crewe, or sometimes slow and poorly organised engine changes at Crewe station. I state this about the West Coast Main Line just in case the media will probably use its usual practise of blaming the 40 year old locomotives. 1D88 tonight was delayed by a failed freight south of Crewe, 1D89 suffered an unknown delay.

Brief news update from today, apologies for the lack of update but I haven’t had much spare time this weekend, full update tomorrow night.
A good day was marred by the failure of 47851 at Warrington with dragging brakes on 1T17, this led to the late departure of 47150’s second train later on as it was awaiting the set of stock which was abandoned for several hours at Warrington.
47841 was seen at Carlisle tonight, repairs to it were finished by Friday.
47828 had been thought to have been allocated to 1A85 2019 Wolverhampton-Nuneaton, but on this day the train ran as 1A85 2020 BNS-Euston via Wolves and Stafford with 390034 leaving BNS 30 minutes late.

47303 is awaiting road transfer away from Ipswich.
For Wednesday (tomorrow) 47818 will be on exam, 47200 will be standby at Norwich, 47714 should work 0630 Norwich-Liverpool St via Cambridge/ 1147 return. 47813 should also work 1212 Norwich-Liverpool St via Cambridge/ 1727 return.
On Sunday it was wideley thought that 47813 had failed prior to working the 0845 Norwich-Liverpool Street drag, this was not so - the leading carriage was at fault, although was working on Crown Point depot but something happened while coupled to 90020.
47811 failed at Penzance last night (unknown fault), after repair it left 58 minutes late and arrived on time at Paddington this morning.
Poor ATLO 47 availability again, just three in traffic - and one of those is in Scotland!!!! (826). Far more useful if a 57 was up there at the moment, as 47's are needed in north Wales, although 47's on Anglo-Scottish workings would be preferred by most people!
Of the eight loco's, four of them were expected to return to Porterbrook in September - but rumours suggest all eight may remain with Virgin for a while longer.
This weekend there are Liverpool-Crewe drags via Warrington Bank Quay, as well as the Nuneaton-Wolves drags, and Holyhead-Crewe workings via Middlewich. Guaranteed 47 action on a few of the Liverpool workings, and at least one would be expected on Nuneatons to join a number of 57's.

Good news, a 47 at Motherwell is expected to be joining the Riviera fleet at some point in the near future.
57601 was out of traffic for routine maintenance work prior to Friday. It does have thin tyres but they are not badly worn as was stated by myself last week.
47854 has unfortunately had some graffiti sprayed upon one of its sides, as does one of the WCRC carriages that it hauled on Saturday. Presumably this was done while the stock was stabled early on Saturday morning away from Carnforth awaiting the tour.

The Norwich-Okehampton NENTA tour tomorrow (Saturday) is expected to be 47355 from Norwich to Exeter St Davids, 47703 forward to Okehampton. On the return 355 will work to Exeter, for 703 forward. NENTA can be contacted on 01692 406152. On arrival at Okehampton 47716 and 73134 will be in operation on the Dartmoor Railway, who can be contacted on 01837 55667.
57601 WILL be out tomorrow, presumably repaired (shame), with a decent loco – 854 on Railtourers Scarborough (via Beverley) to Carlisle. Railtourer can be contacted on 01482 659082.
East Lancs this weekend will have either 47769 or 47839 on workings previously advertised to be just 839. The ‘beer-ex’ on Saturday evening will be 45041 and 47769. 769 was tested yesterday on a train with 47839, and the tests went very well. The 47’s shouldn’t be working on Sunday. The DRS loco’s being sent are 37218 and 37611, no 47’s as stated recently.
Note the large number of Virgin 47’s on exam, only 810 and 816 available and both in use, also note 47813 is the Colchester thunderbird! This Sundays north Wales 47 hauled trains are diverted via Middlewich, as they are next Sunday, rather than the top’n’tail shuttles of recent weeks.
On Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st July, 1D87 and 1A77 return will be worked by 57301 (yawn) for filming and other random Virgin publicity stunts, presumably with Liverpool drivers as most, if not all of them now know the route to Holyhead.
Contrary to the above re: the NENTA tour, it is now expected that 47703 will LEAD from Norwich, as on arrival at Norwich the set ran around Wensum Curve (by the depot) rather than straight in to Norwich station sidings.

It is rumoured that another 47/7 has been purchased by Riviera along with 47769, although the identity of the loco has not been established.

DRS 47’s are now thought to not be attending this weekends East Lancs gala, one of the reasons possibly being that Crewe DRS drivers who would be taking the loco’s there are not trained on 47’s.
Anybody wondering about the disappearance of 57601 shouldn’t worry, it has very worn tyres and is currently awaiting attention. Due to the nature of the loco it wears tyres out quicker than normal locomotives. Expect 47854 to see more use on tours using WCRC, and 37197 plus 37261 could appear on more tours.
A report from Healey Mills places the following 47’s stored in these locations:
47733, 734 and 787 (which is still named) are near the office block, while 793 and 732 are mixed in a short line of 56s furthest away from office block (one of 5 lines of stored locos).
47145 and 709 will work the Poole-Norwich charter on Saturday, 355 and 703 to work the Norwich-Okehampton.
The Battlefield line on weekends from 24th/25th July until the end of August are 100% diesel operated, so 47640 could make an appearance.
Can anybody confirm where 47197, 805 and 847 have been located over the pass few days? Thanks.
47309 has not been at Lawley Street at all this week, this was a duplicated part of the list which I never spotted! It is corrected on this weeks lists below.

The 47’s currently out of service (excluding ATLO pool) have faults with the following, stated as the reason for being out of traffic:
47237-coolant leak, 47298-engine repairs, 47303-A exam, 47358-A exam, 47501-A exam, 47714-batteries, 47802-B exam, 47812-fuel transfer pump, 47818-repaint, 47848-camshaft.
I am told that the only reason Freightliner's 47805 worked 1D87 on Monday rather than 47851 which was present, was because the driver saw a Virgin liveried loco and took that(!)

News:
47818 is at Norwich and is out of service, still awaiting its repaint into 'one' livery.
47501 at Carlisle is on an A exam, 802 on a B exam, perhaps scotching rumours of an appearance this weekend at the East Lancs for it.
47769 (the former 47491) has definitely gone to Riviera Trains at Crewe. It was believed this was purchased from EWS by Harry Needle, whether it has been bought from Harry Needle or directly from EWS is not known (and frankly none of our business!)
Fragonset have purchased 47744 (ex 600), and 47767 (ex 641). Both are expected to return to traffic, possibly reverting to their former numbers. 47780 (also Fragonset) was hoped to return to service in Intercity livery as its previous number of 47836.
Further information regarding 47/0's to Holyhead: 47285 worked 1D89 on a Saturday night in July 1995, and 47016 worked the 0850(ish) Holyhead-Crewe working during a Saturday in May 1998. In the same month 016 worked 1V50 from Preston to (???)
Also, 47829's first working to Holyhead in Police livery was on 1D88 1945 Crewe-Holyhead on Wednesday 27th March 2002, coincidentally the same day that 47292 was dead on the rear of 1M56 from Penzance after working 1V50 from Bristol the night before! 47829 had also worked its first train in Police livery the day before (26th).
On Sunday 47840 failed at Nuneaton, after being repaired drivers were instructed not to shut the loco down under any circumstances!
Further to the comment on 47769 above, the loco MAY appear at the East Lancs event this weekend, as the loco was running today! 47402 will not be running this weekend unfortunately.
47714 was included in a test run with 47813 to Stowmarket and back with 86215 and an ex Virgin class 90.
1D89 was heavily delayed, arriving at Holyhead over 105 minutes late. It left Euston on time but was delayed by a fault on a preceding Pendolino and sat outside Bletchley for a lengthy period. Due to the delay it also sat at Llandudno Junction due to booked engineering works.

47813 is now in the CREL pool, 47832 is now in the SBXL pool.
57603(?) was working 1A99 last night failed at Largin in Cornwall, but managed to continue to Plymouth where it was intended to be replaced by 47811. 57602 continued though and failed again at Totnes where 811 hauled 602 dead in tow. 811 worked to Exeter where it swapped with another 57 on 1C99, 811 returning to Penzance.
Some of the ATLO 47's are now serviceable again! Two worked to Holyhead tonight, 47826 and 47851.
47769 was collected from Toton today by 47839, presumably highlighting the rumour I heard this weekend that it has been purchased by Riviera Trains (despite being in the MBDL pool - Riviera use RTLO for their loco's). 769's paintwork looks in surprisingly good condition. 769 was withdrawn in late 2001 with cracked cylinder liners.

More news is of course to be added from the end of last week, a distinct shortage of time this weekend has led to the weak news updates – apologies for this. Hopefully normal service resuming tomorrow night! Thanks to the contributors who have sent in sightings, especially those which have yet to be used.
For those news editors (magazine and website), and list keepers who use some of the info of here (often without any acknowledgement) here is some of the facts from this weekend...
47197 - first no heat 47 to work from Holyhead since 47204 rescued 47847 on 10th September 1998. 204 worked 1A46 from Holyhead to Crewe, having run light engine from Basford Hall during the previous night.
47197's last passenger train was from Manchester to Cardiff on 15th May this year and return working.
47292 ventured as far as Llandudno Junction for a Green Express railtour on 30th August 2002.
Since 204's working, the only Freightliner 47 to work to/from Holyhead had been 47812, working 1D65 1030 Crewe-Holyhead/ 1K67 1248 Holyhead-Crewe on Tuesday 23rd March this year. Many will remember it worked 1D45 1719 Man Picc-Holyhead on Friday 2nd May last year, but the loco was still leased by Virgin at that point. It had dragged 1A41 0932 Liverpool-Euston from Crewe Coal Yard to Crewe station that morning while undertaking Crewe standby duties for Virgin West Coast. The following morning it worked 1G95 as far as Crewe on top of 47770 where 770 continued forward alone to Birmingham. 812 became a Freightliner loco within the following few weeks.
The last recorded workings for both 47805 and 47829 to Holyhead were on 6th July 2002, and 17th May 2002 respectively, and contrary to a rumour going around that before this Saturday (03/07/04) 47829 HAD been to Holyhead in Police livery, as it was painted during January/February 2002.
47197 should work 1A49 (0920 Holyhead-Crewe) tomorrow (Monday), with 829 in tow providing ETH - 47805 should work 1A23 (0527 Holyhead-Crewe).
47714 hauled 86232 with 47813 on rear, passing Lakenham at 1240 with the Norwich to Cambridge test run.

1D87/1A62 were cancelled THROUGHOUT both ways surprisingly, and for the first time since 47812 was hired to Arriva Trains Wales earlier this year – Freightliner loco’s have appeared at Holyhead. Not one, but three!
47829 worked 1T62, 47805 worked 1D89, but more surprisingly 47197 was dead on the rear of 1T62 and should work either the 1120 Holyhead-Chester or the 1345 Holyhead-Chester tomorrow!
47805 was seen leaving Crewe at around 8am for Manchester to haul a Euston service to Crewe. 847 may have worked a similar service and was seen arriving light engine in to Manchester Piccadilly at 1040 from the south during the morning.
On Sunday it is expected that the following loco's will work the following services:
47197=1T87 1120 Holyhead-Chester/ 1A75 1610 Holyhead-Chester
47805=1A61 1345 Holyhead-Chester/ 1D89 2149 Chester-Holyhead

47826 should have (by diagram worked the 1449 Nuneaton-Wolves, but it was 'stepped up' to work 1G25 (two hours earlier) due to a broken rail at Stockingford which had trapped the booked class 57 for this train in the backlog of trains while repairs were carried out.
Conflicting reports though as to whether 826 worked the 0919 or the 1019 from Wolves to Nuneaton.
