  • Now with former FGW 47832 at Oxley for use by Fragonset for the foreseeable future (its even in the SDFR pool now!), and 47811 in the south west and 815 on exam - FGW are hiring 47805 from Freightliner! This should only be until 57605 arrives or when the other 47’s are available.
  • The contract between Arriva Trains Wales and Riviera Trains is set to continue until week ending 11th September, so including this week that’s another three weeks.
  • 47854 was seen heading south through Lancaster at 10:30am light engine, it was heading for Crewe Works where 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" had just been repainted. 854 worked dead behind 71000 and its support coach back to Carnforth. After 854 worked light to York as a replacement for 47798.
  • The earlier question about 47840 has been answered, see Saturdays light engine moves for further info (although it was also seen at Shap heading north on Friday night at 1715!).
  • 47402 was intended to be used at the East Lancs Railway on Sunday 4th September but is still not ready. 769 was to replace it but it has also been stopped for repairs.

  • Bad news (very bad in fact) part 1… when Freightliner return 47805, 47843, 47847, and 47848 to Porterbrook they are to be converted to 57’s for Scotrail, presumably to replace the 67’s used on the sleeper services? It is a shame to lose more 47/8’s as these were regarded as the most useful of the remaining members of the class due to having twin fuel tanks, and also being in fairly good condition.
  • Bad news part 2… 47816, 47830 and two other ATSP pool 47’s will be withdrawn by the end of the summer timetable, 57313/314/315/316 are nearly ready for traffic.
  • Bad news part 3… 57605 is nearly ready for traffic for First Great Western.

    News:

  • 1G11 and 1D77 were 175103 rather than 47853. The 0150 Holyhead-BNS and 0521 BNS-Holyhead overnight unit left very late from Holyhead following a late arrival of a boat from Ireland, the return leaving Birmingham 45 minutes late (do Stena Line pay for the huge amount of knock on delays this caused for the rest of the day?). In turn this delayed 853 with the 0854 Holyhead-Crewe by around 30 minutes as it had to wait for traincrew from the Birmingham-Holyhead service.
    With Crewe’s exceptionally slow run rounds as always the return 1130 Crewe-Holyhead left Crewe 40 minutes late and arrived at Holyhead almost an hour late after following units.
    175103 was ready to depart Holyhead with the 1358 to Crewe after 853 arrived around 1420 and the 175 returned from Crewe on time with the 1631 service. If the hauled set had been used it would have been delayed by around five to ten minutes at Holyhead, and anywhere above 15 minutes at Crewe whereas the spare 175 could work straight in and straight out of its terminus points so in light of the delays it was a good plan.

  • Re: 47853 running out of fuel, this may have happened following the supply cables to the fuel point at Holyhead being cut on Wednesday night so nothing got fuelled. This was probably something to do with the work to upgrade the depot for class 220/221's in future.

  • In a correction to a statement yesterday, 47810, 47816, 47826, 47828, 47830, 47840, 47841 and 47851 ARE ALL IN the ATSP pool (since at least Friday), not ATLO - the gen was provided by a reliable source (hence I did not enquire elsewhere as to the pool code).
    Also there are no Nuneaton drags on 29th August (I had been told earlier in the summer that the drags would be on EVERY Sunday until the end of the summer timetable) AND the National Rail website showed these as happening yesterday when I checked.
    Apologies for any confusion caused. It is my policy to correct ANY errors on this site, for historical sake and so people dont go to places where there arent any 47's, so if any mistakes are spotted by anybody please email me and let me know!
  • 47853 and its four carriages today were three ex VWC mark 2's, and an ex VXC half brake. Reported to all be in excellent condition and very clean (in contrast to the ex FGW stock five months ago) and 853 was sounding very well (as usual).
  • 47303 did not work the Hams Hall-Daventry turn today as previously stated, this turn works only on Tuesdays-Saturdays until 5th September.

    Must stress again that these are NOT CONFIRMED but are rumoured diagrams IF Arriva do hire the hauled stock again, which will not require any retraining as the relevant traincrew will mostly have worked hauled stock within the last six months, and Holyhead drivers still do for Virgin West Coast.
  • (18:25 update) The above seems to be correct, as I've even been told that 1H44 will be a unit on Monday, with 1D37 being 47 hauled after the stock runs ECS to Manchester (via Styal, as Stockport is shut).
    Its not known why this is happening, or for how long (although rumoured only for a few weeks), 1D37 and 1H52 as stated are usually a FNW 158, and it is not thought the 175's are unreliable any more more (apart from the air conditioning in this heat!)
  • 47813 worked Monday's 1212 Norwich-London but terminated at Cambridge because of a fatality which resulted in no trains running from Cambridge to Liverpool Street or Stansted for a period.
  • Not noticed it anywhere else and I mentioned it when it first began so I'll mention it again for an update (thats my excuse anyway!) the FNW hired class 31's are surprisingly rumoured to be continuing to work beyond the end of the summer timetable. They currently work 1J02 0716 Blackpool North-Manchester Victoria, and 1N58 1706 return. It has been suggested that they are likely to work a turn based at Man Vic rather than Blackpool, although working the Southport line is unlikely as loco hauled passenger trains are now banned, and there are not many through trains to Blackpool from Man Vic, leaving Liverpool as an option? Alternatively 47's on Man Vic-Huddersfield or Morecambe services would be nice!
  • (23:30 update) I am told all the above is true regarding 47's on the 'coast', and that 1D37/1H52 are no longer an FNW unit as I stated so this is not part of the reason. 175's have been suffering poor reliability, up to four ex Wales & Borders 158's have been seen covering for 175's on some occasions, although FNW and TPE seem to get the full compliment of units on their franchises.

  • 47 839 left Crewe LNWR depot on Sunday afternoon light engine to Polmadie for use by Virgin Cross Country staff as a route learner around the Glasgow diversionary routes for the next two weeks. Then the loco should then move on to the Newcastle area for one week before heading home.
