  • It seems it was one of the carriages brake blocks at fault on 1D75 yesterday and not 853, as the train was stopped to be examined at Penmaenmawr after sparks were reported to be seen coming from the rear of the train. On inspection later one of the rear bogies brake shoes was found to be missing.

  • 1Dxx from London to Holyhead (1918 from Crewe) is supposed to be a Pendolino. Last night 57310 attempted to attach to the said train, and the hatch on the front of the Pendolino would not open, so passengers were forced to catch the 2017 Crewe-Holyhead service, which just so happened to be an ex Virgin 47 with ex Virgin carriages – 47853 on 1D84!
    The incident involving 57308 on 1R19 yesterday made it on to the BBC news website, the ITV London news, and the Sky News channel. The train this morning was 57310, with a mark3 set (didn’t take long for a return!) after it eventually went up the coast last night.
  • 1K78 1735 Holyhead-Crewe was cancelled, 1D75 was cancelled at Bangor due to one worn brakeblock on 853. 1K78 is to start at Chester with a unit which will also work 1D84.
  • Two new 47 preservation websites have been brought to my attention, one for the 47401 Project and the other for 47192 (Staffordshire Type 4 Limited), in addition to the two links above for the Brush Type 4 Fund (105/295/376), and the Stratford 47 Group (367/596).
  • Tomorrow (Wednesday) 47150 should work 0Z47 0606 Kingsland Road-Derby/ 5Z47 1105 Derby-Minehead (with HST set for safe storage, transferred to FGW)/ 0Z48 1900 Minehead-Kingsland Road.

  • 57601 appeared on Compass Tours 'The Killiecrankie Explorer' today, due to WCRC (like all charter operators) understandably being unwilling to send a loco out on a tour on its own. 37261 was the preferred and originally booked 'insurance' loco, but was unfit for traffic, hence the late substitution. It did not work any of the outward journey, although did provide ETH for the back six carriages.
    The official train codes are stated above in 'other workings', but the train ran in passenger service forward from Pitlochry to Blair Atholl, from Blair Atholl the train was then ECS. Official departure time on the return from Blair Atholl was 1546.
    'Maroon 5', or formerly 'Purple Ronnie' assisted from Blair Atholl to Drumochter Summit, and assisted on the return due to late running. It is not known exactly where the loco worked to and from as it was heard powering up from a signal check in Scotland along with 854, the only confirmed distance it worked on the return trip was from Carlisle to Oxenholme where the second driver left the train.
    The last two tours and the lack of available 47's has lead to 37197 and 57601 joining 47292, 47709 and 47854 as loco's that have worked Compass Tours excursions, although the 37 has only worked on ECS's.
  • A further point to make is that the return journey where the 47 and 57 worked in tandem - this could be the first time on a passenger train that a 47 has worked at the same time as a 57? Can anybody think of any times it has happened in the past?

  • The end of Virgin loco’s on booked Holyhead-Crewe workings is this Saturday, the 25th. The final working will be 1A62 1323 Holyhead-Crewe. Substitutions for Voyagers/Pendolinos/whatever/etc could occur in the forthcoming weeks, although the workings change significantly.
    No idea as yet if Virgin are planning anything ‘special’ (I thought 47’s were special enough anyway?!)
    Arriva... rumours suggest the Riviera hired 47 and stock will continue until some time in December (no particular date heard as yet), the suggested diagram being 1K57/ 1D65/ 1K67/ 1D75/ 1K78 (1735 Holyhead-Crewe)/ 1D84 (20xx Crewe-Holyhead). Any talk of two loco hauled turns seems to be unfounded.
  • A final point, during this last week where many enthusiasts are around in north Wales...spare a thought for the rest of the spotters/enthusiasts/bashers (and normals) aboard the train(s), so rather than standing at the front window/ front vestibule the entire journey from Manchester or Crewe to Holyhead (and back!) - take a seat and let other people share the window (rather than what has been going on lately). Also remember leaning from windows can be a safety hazard and a lot of guards do not like people doing it.

  • Last Thursday 1D89 was cancelled at Crewe due to the 87 or the stock setting off hot axle box detectors between Euston and Crewe. The set had apparently been in service all day and had set the detectors off earlier!
  • Oddly WCRC 57601 was seen at Banbury at 1830 on Monday on the front of a Virgin HST set stabled in the sidings.
  • The remains of 47844 in Crewe Works are unfortunately to be cut up very shortly, the loco was of course rejected from the 57/3 scheme (thankfully perhaps) due to framework damage. It will follow in the footsteps of 47849 which was also rejected from Loughborough for conversion – being cut in early 2002.
  • It would seem all six of Freightliners 47/8’s are to remain on hire to them from Porterbrook until the end of next year, despite stories suggesting four would become class 57’s. The 57 story does seem to have some truth as it is thought Scotrail are keen on using loco’s other then 67’s on the overnight sleeper services north of Edinburgh.
  • 47810 has indeed lost some of its roof. The roof area around the exhaust has corroded and parts were seen coming away on 1A39 on Saturday in Wales. Because of the need for diesels the loco was used all weekend but has now gone to Willesden for repair. The collision details of 47828 and 57312 are still unknown.
  • 47805 has dragged 1A92 1730 Penzance-Paddington HST from Truro to Plymouth where the service was cancelled, 805 may have worked ECS as 5Z77 to Laira, confirmation not received.

  • 47839 was taken back to Crewe on Wednesday evening after working 1D45 following a driver reporting an alleged speedo fault, resulting in the loco having to return to its home depot for the speedo calibration to be checked. 853 made a welcome return to traffic, running light for this mornings 1H44. The loco’s have now reversed from the previous plan, 853 will now work until Saturday evening, with 839 working 1D67 2015 Crewe-Holyhead on Sunday evening.
  • It seems 47841 was 1A49 yesterday, and 1D88 the night before (Tuesday), contrary to my report of the two services possibly being cancelled as they were not allocated.

  • More news received on the unfortunate fire at Old Oak Common, a report from London Fire Brigade website dated Monday 6th September. "Three trains have been destroyed following a fire in a transport depot in Old Oak Common Lane, Harlesden last night. Around thirty firefighters using breathing apparatus and thermal imaging equipment tackled the blaze which started in the carriage of one train, and quickly spread to two other trains nearby. All three trains were out of service and empty at the time. The fire gutted nine carriages and caused substantial smoke damage throughout the trains. Fire investigation officers will start their investigation into the cause of the blaze today. The Brigade was called at 2244 and crews are still at the scene making the area safe. Crews from Park Royal and Willesden fire stations attended the incident."
    Does anybody know what other trains or vehicles were involved?
    47 635 is confirmed as undamaged by the fire, it was spotted on Tuesday morning looking fine. 47709 was also seen at Old Oak with a tail lamp attached, and was coupled to the burnt VST stock. 709 was still incorrectly showing as being at Oxford today. Also at Old Oak 47756 and 782 are sitting alongside each other on the EWS side of the depot, 782 having been heavily graffitied and is missing several parts including buffers and doors, 004 is no longer visible at Old Oak and is believed to be inside the servicing shed.
  • As reported on Monday 47853 took 839 to Holyhead last night, and returned with 832 in tow.
  • Only three of the ATSP 47’s available currently, with 47830 out of traffic at Willesden with its traction motor fault, 840 at Longsight with a coolant leak, and 851 at Longsight after failing last week when its fire bells went off after ‘smoke’ filled the engine room.
    840 was dead on the rear of a Liverpool service last night, and is presumed to have been dead in tow or worked an ECS to Longsight later in the evening/night.
  • 47815 was seen receiving a new generator at Landore yesterday (Tuesday). The old one was lifted out and the new one placed inside by a mobile crane outside the maintenance shed.
  • 47829 and 47843 were seen top n tailing vehicles through St Albans southbound at 11:30 with 843 leading, returning later with some class 317's.
  • 47832 had returned to Derby by 2155 and was parked with 45112 at the south end of Derby station.

  • A report has been received regarding a fire in a rake of coaches at Old Oak Common yesterday evening. Rumours apparently circling around London Fire Brigade crews were that a "blue diesel" (47635?) was involved and may have been damaged. Confirmed details unknown.
  • Further to that report, following 709's failure on Saturday, the tour ran forward with 66530 to Oxford(?) where the train terminated (instead of going to.....?) Anyway, 57603 worked the train ECS to Old Oak Common, and in the haste (in the story reported to me) a very unfortunate incident occured where the gas boiler was left switched on in Mark1 buffet car 1981 (recently repainted). The unstaffed train arrived at Old Oak, and sometime during the night flames engulfed the buffet car and spread to four surrounding vehicles, gutting them in the process. The vehicles were normally dedicated to VST, and thus tomorrows(?) VST tour was cancelled.
  • 57605 is now at Old Oak Common having been released from Loughborough.

  • Regarding 47832, I stated a while back that the standby loco to replace 47853 would be a Freightliner loco, while rumours elsewhere stated Fragonset. I am told by several sources that Freightliner (surprisingly) refused to provide a 47/8 for hire to Arriva last weekend, thus 47832 was hired from Fragonset (which I believe is still owned by Porterbrook and leased to the Derby based company) and it was still intended to use Freightliner loco's at that time.
  • 47851 is believed to have failed at Norton Bridge on 1A77, and hauled forward by 57305.
  • 47805 and 47812 were in Crewe station by early evening for the weekends drags.

    News:

  • 47853 has been examined by LNWR staff at Crewe and the apparent main generator failure was not as serious as first thought. Blown turbocharger reports elsewhere emerged from an unknown source and were incorrect. A loose connection was found which caused heat damage to the external cables, causing burning and sparking witnessed at the time. It is hoped repairs can be completed by Sunday evening to allow the loco to resume its diagram on Monday next week.
    47839 is staying away an extra week until next Monday when it will haul 14 Riviera carriages which are on hire to Virgin Cross Country back to Crewe. 839 will cover the Arriva diagram if 853 is not repaired in time.
  • Can anybody confirm whether 47828 is at Rugby or Willesden?
  • 87012 failed on 1A87 1538 Lancaster-Northampton at Birmingham International so 47810 was sent light from Stafford to Birmingham International and worked the return 1H99 1956 Northampton-Manchester from there departing 32 minutes late at 2111.
