1K53 was a 158 from Bangor, as Holyhead to Bangor was still closed for track renewal west of Bangor. Proving that the six carriage 47 hauled train is usually very useful on this service as the train was a 158 to Chester, where a 153 was added to the front - arriving in Crewe full and standing throughout the service!
Usual difficulties with Pendolino's and 57's seemed to be encountered at Crewe during the day, 1P14 which is usually a DVT set was a Pendolino - but when the 57 attempted to attach it couldn't so the train was cancelled.

Highlights of this week....(full news update now added below for the whole week)....
47851: worked 1D25 1923 Crewe-Holyhead/ 1R19 0538 Holyhead-Crewe from Wednesday night until this (Friday) morning due to the diagram being a loco hauled set all week rather than a Pendolino drag.
47853 worked on the ATW working until 1D65 on Wednesday morning where 47839 replaced it - both loco's performing faultlessly (although 839 is making a ticking noise when the power is applied!), Riviera Trains proving (as Cotswold Rail did during the Ipswich tunnel blockade) that class 47's can still be very reliable loco's. Only the lighting in the coaching stock has caused concern lately - leading to 1K67 being cancelled on Monday and 1D75 starting 55 minutes late after the train ran ECS from Holyhead to Crewe for FOUR carriages to have their batteries charged.
47810 worked an ECS to Polmadie on Thursday.
A fire aboard 175008 (carriage 50708) whilst working 1N56 2046 Manchester Airport-Blackpool North on Sunday south of Preston (thought to have been caused by the unit striking an object which pierced its fuel tank??? Corrections welcome) led to 47826 working a additional 1Z08 0100 Preston-Glasgow Central service as the OHLE was isolated until 0205 on Monday morning. 826 arrived in Glasgow at 0425! Since Sunday 826 has been at Carstairs an Polmadie.

47841 was allocated to 1W95 1721 Euston-Northampton(!) but was failed before departure. Ironically an 87 was found for the train afterwards, which too failed before departure! 841 remained at Euston afterwards. 87035 eventually worked the train running 50 minutes late.
47830 took three Virgin mark 3’s and a DVT from Crewe LNWR into Crewe station before running round n heading to Willesden.
47270 worked an "extra" Freightliner to Doncaster from the south, then worked light engine to York and returned as a route learner.

47769 was on shuting duties at Bury on Saturday.
With reference to FGW’s 47 farewell relief service on Saturday 11th December. 47815 is intended to be used along with another Porterbrook 47 – this still will NOT be 47811 as its repairs at Landore have been prior to it moving to a new owner. A Freightliner 47/8 would be more likely although a Virgin one should not be ruled out.
47853 ran ECS from Holyhead to Crewe Carriage Shed instead of working 1K67 due to four carriages being without lighting. Once rectified, 853 began 1D75 running 55 minutes late, leading to 1K78 terminating at Chester to save on the start time delay to 1D84.

The line between Bangor and Holyhead reopened yesterday afternoon, although it is closed again today for engineering work, and again next Sunday. If 47839/853 did not work 1D84 through to Holyhead last night then 1K57 will obviously have to be a unit on Monday morning.

news:
After heavy rainfall in north Wales, all trains were cancelled west of Llandudno Junction after around 14:30. Flooding was over the top of the running rails west of Gaerwen signal box (east of Bodorgan) and at Bangor in the second tunnel east of the station. 1K67 was delayed at Bangor for an hour after being the last train to run through the flooding on Anglesey. Unfortunately the weather spoilt what had been a 100% reliable week for 47839 and 47853, marred only by usual delays caused by other services.
47270 ran light from Eastleigh at around 1345 today to Southampton.
Partially relavant, 57309 was seen heading through Warrington Central running light engine towards Liverpool. It is unusual for loco's to use this route (although not unknown as drags have gone this way in the past very occasionally when the Chat Moss route is closed). Unfortunately none of the current Sundays Only Liverpool should be 47 hauled as all the Liverpools are Pendolino's and dragged by 57's.

Regarding the comments made last week about DRS's 47237 and 47802, information has surfaced - 237 is having cylinder liners repaired at Carlisle, having not worked since May and then is believed to be heading for Loughborough due to major engine problems. 298 seems to have worked just once since returning from Glasgow Works (so thats just once this year then!), and finally 47802 still seems to be out of traffic with small miscallaneous problems and hasnt worked a train since the spring.
47815 is expected to work on the FGW sleepers again from Thursday night until Saturday, due to class 57 failures.
On a related note on Saturday 11th December 2004 - 815 and another 47 will work a Great Western Brush Farewell, leaving Paddington at 0800 and returning from Penzance at 1900 which are both normal service trains. More news when available.
47811 was fitted with a new engine and generator (as 815 has been) today, completed by the afternoon.

Note the details for the next Compass Tour's excursion are now on the website. The tour is on Saturday 18th December 2004, running from Chinley and Manchester stations to Newcastle and Durham, out via the Settle + Carlisle and Tyne Valley, returning via the ECML. On arrival at Durham there is the opportunity of an 'add on tour' rather than spending the full amount of time at Durham and Newcastle for an extra £10 (£5 for under 16's) passengers can travel via Hartlepool and Sunderland. Anybody not booked on the train can partake in the mini tour, by either booking in advance or on the day. The loco's in use will be two Cotswold rail loco's, an ETH fitted 47 and a no heat loco.
Note 769 workings added for Sunday, and 105 and 376 added for Saturday (and believed to have worked the same on Sunday).
47830 is believed to have been dragged from Preston to Longsight this morning after suffering a shifted tyre.

Please note that the charter on November 13th that would have been Cotswold Rail 47’s is now expected to be a class 66 or 67. A charter on February 19th 2005 may now be Cotswold Rail 47’s instead.
On a related note, Cotswold Rail owned 47528 is now up for sale. The loco is notable as being the final loco of the class produced by Crewe Works - and until recently was expected to be stripped completely for spares. Any preservationists interested in this unique loco should visit www.cotswoldrail.com or contact myself.
Another related note, 47844 – previously at Crewe Works has unfortunately been cut up recently as reported on www.wnxx.com. The loco was to have been a ‘gate guardian’, having been a Crewe built machine – but was rather derelict when it arrived there and deemed unfit to cosmetically restore.
47714 was the Colchester thunderbird but was failed. 818 retrieved it, and later 818 became the Colchester thunderbird.

Another problem on the Arriva turn yesterday, 1K57 arrived at Crewe 45m late, left on 1D65 about 30m late. 1K67 never appeared at Chester, and was roughly 30m late arriving at Chester. Presumably it reversed on the triangle at Chester?

Unconfirmed but from informed sources it would appear that West Coast Railway Company have taken over the contract to provide loco’s for the Royal Scotsman, formerly provided by EWS. WCRC now have a good fleet of their own loco’s, 37197/261, 47854 and 57601 – and this is maybe a move away from charter operations towards loco hire? WCRC are also expected to operate their own 47245 within a few months, and in the future 47492 will hopefully make a return, still owned by a private owner. Another serviceable 47 is also still expected to arrive at WCRC’s Carnforth depot shortly.
On Monday 37197 and 47854 should be working 1H94 0855 Stirling-Edinburgh.
On a related note, Compass Tours who formerly hired loco’s, coaching stock and staff from WCRC, will now be working with Merlin Rail and Cotswold Rail on future day excursions, with at least two of Cotswold Rails loco’s being used on each tour, expected to be a no heat loco and an ETH example. Several more class 47s will also be acquired by Cotswold Rail soon.
Expect an announcement shortly regarding future Compass Tours railtours.
Riviera Trains/Arriva Trains Wales must be commended for using not four, but SIX carriages on their loco hauled service in north Wales since 1D65 on Thursday. The additional service to Manchester yesterday was also six carriages in length. Six carriages was probably just used due to yesterdays England v Wales football match but it certainly reduced the usual Friday and Saturday overcrowding. One problem on 5937 and 6113 was a lack of both lighting and heating, and also door lock lights on Friday and Saturday (no reports received regarding this for Thursday). Other than that the stock and loco's are still being provided in a well looked after condition, and of course six carriages is better on brake force than four carriages - thus reducing wear and tear on brake blocks.

839 and 853 worked ECS to Holyhead last night for 1K57 today.
On Saturday and Sunday 47449 will work the 1100 and 1400 from Llangollen, and the 1250 and 1520 from Carrog. 47117 will work the 1300 from Loughborough on 13th and 14th November, with 47402 hopefully working at the East Lancs Railway on 27th and 28th November.
47813 and 47818 top'n'tailed an Anglia working today. The workings were...
1P53 1640 Norwich-Liverpool Street, returning on 1P56 1900 Liverpool Street-Norwich. They were intended to work the 1842 Liverpool Street-Norwich but didnt due to being delayed between Manningtree and Colchester on the way down due to the service being cautioned to inspect for objects on the line.
47839 on 1K78 was terminated at Chester due to being 70 minutes late, reversing around Chester triangle to depart with 1D84 around 20 minutes late. The late running was caused by local 'scallies' at Prestatyn holding up a preceeding 175 while 839 was working 1K67. The youths had been accused of thieving passengers bags and British Transport Police were in attendance to that service, delaying 839.
47805 was seen hauling FHH hoppers from Stourton, passing Woodlesford at 1540.

1D65 1017 from Crewe was cancelled due to the brake blocks on 839 needing renewing. The only time the Arriva loco hauled service has so far been replaced by units is when the stock/loco have been taken out of traffic to replace brake blocks (with exception to 853's failure at Bangor last month, and when 853 ran out of fuel on 19/08 after the Holyhead fuel line scenario). Excessive wear on the breaks possibly caused by the fact the new turn stops at a large number of stations so one would expect increased maintenance is occuring in comparison with the previous turn due to higher braking? 1K57 calls at 12, 1D65 - 12, 1K67 - 16, 1D75 - 10, 1K78 - 15, 1D84 - 12.
The old turn was 1H44 - 16, 1D37 - 10, 1H52 - 9, 1D45 - 18.
A class 175 appears to have gone ECS from Holyhead to Rhyl to pick up the service.
47830 returned from Holyhead to Longsight ECS after arriving there on 1D24 last night.
Don't forget the Preston-Crewe drag timings have changed for tomorrow and are as listed on the winter diagram page.
47811 is at Landore and not St Phillips Marsh.
47769 worked a steam loco's diagram on the East Lancs Railway's 'Thomas' day, with 31435 replacing 769's intended diagram.

47829 + 843 were seen heading through Bletchley from Selhurst to Bedford this morning with 319 unit at 0715, 812 also passed heading south.
47805 was noted passing Milford sidings heading north towards York with 11 new Freighliner heavy Haul wagons in tow, passing north at 1046 and then returning south light engine at 1157.
47853 passed Colton heading north on a mixed rake of 9 coaches at 1448. It is not known whether 853 brought all nine carriages from Crewe or whether it collected some or all from MoD Kineton.
47816 was not the Llandudno Junction standby today as previously stated, 57310 was.
