    news:

  • 47853 worked 1K57 to Chester only following an incident at Saltney Junction. A SPAD (signal passed at danger) occured, passing a red signal by 100 yards, although it seems the single reverted from single yellow to red as the train approached.
  • Rumours surrounding class 37's have unfortunately not gone away in the last few days, meetings seem to have occured by relevant parties with the intention on having the through wired 37 hauled set in NORTH Wales and not down the 'Marches' route. Judging by emails read this seems to be instead of 47's, rather than in addition to, but on the 1H44/ 1D37/ 1H52/ 1D45 diagram. How 80mph loco's will keep to schedules is unknown.......
Riviera's contract to provide 47's and stock had been extended into next year. It is not known if this has changed.
    20:45 update on the above, the latest expected 'hauled' turn is: 1Hxx 0727 Chester-Manchester, 1D37 1000 Manchester-Holyhead, 1H52 13xx Holyhead-Manchester, 1D46 1746(ish) Manchester-Chester.
Again, whether this is a 47 hauled turn, or a 37 hauled turn in addition or in place of 47's is not known.
21:30 update (see this is why I didn't mention any of these rumours until now!!!), from two different sources I hear that the 37 plan is non existant, and that the 47 hauled turn will finish on January 1st (2005). Hmm.
23:50 update - an email received mentions that the through wired stock is in poor condition, the loco's only do 80mph, there are no spare through wired sets, and drivers are not trained on 37's being the reasons why it isn't happening with 37's, the same reasons I never mentioned it here until somebody brought up that there had allegedly been union meetings happening today regarding drivers re-signing 37's!
  • And finally...
"Cant get enough Duff?" The unfortunate title on First Great Westerns 'Events and Attractions' web page with reference to December 11th's 47 farewell. The term 'duff' was created by enthusiasts and bashers of other classes many years ago, as 47's were common and turned up frequently on trains that were booked to be hauled by other classes, with the dictionary showing the word as meaning 'bad, useless' (and also a kind of boiled pudding!) Oddly it also means 'to manipulate, so as to look like new' (ie: to duff up). Through the years it has been pointed out by many people to many people, that if you have an interest in 47's - then why call them 'duffs'? The 47 following has increased substantially since they have become rare, and thankfully 'duff' references have decreased recently with exception to a 'name that Duff' quote in 'Traction' magazine when they named 851, and this FGW site quote.
    FGW's page can be visited
here. Homer Simpson can be seen booking his ticket here.
  • 47336 moved from Basford Hall for scrap today at Booths of Rotherham.

    news:

  • With regards the ‘guess the location’ photo (provided by Beekeeper) of 47825 in Intercity Mainline livery. Of the people who guessed only one person got the location wrong (no it wasn’t Brighton). Only one person mentioned the correct year – which was 1993. Other guesses ranged from 1986 through to the late ‘90’s.
The location was Dover Marine station, or Dover Western Docks as it had become at the time of the photograph, the station closed a year after the photo in 1994 when the Channel Tunnel opened. Last report of the site was a year ago, the site was being redeveloped and the tracks had gone, although the trainshed canopy of the station is still there as it is a listed building (any photo’s available?). 47825 was in a period of operation in the ILRA pool and can now be found occasionally making American sounding noises upon the front of charter trains through the West Coast Railway Co. as 57601, but on the occasion of the photograph it happily contained a Sulzer power unit and had worked 1O99 0644 Liverpool Lime Street-Dover Western Docks and was running round its stock to work 1M79 1412 Dover-Liverpool, on 13th April 1993.
47839 apparently worked the final train to the station in August 1994. Correct location guesses were submitted by: Anthead, Eóbhann, Mobile, Nelson, Lewis Bevan, Richard Boyd, Rupert Chambers, Matt Dodd, Dave Hall, Steve Kibble, John Lancaster, Kevin Melia, John Myers, R D Oxborough, John Turner, Neil Walkling (correct year), Nigel Williams, and several others whose names were not on their emails.
  • Following a request for timings for FGW's 47 farewell additional on December 11th, the following have been provided but are now two months old so may have changed:
0718 Paddington, 0747 Reading, then via Swindon and Melksham, then stopping at St Austell, Truro, and 1300 Penzance. In addition it will be stopping at Exeter or Plymouth for a crew change. Return working leaves at:
1410 Penzance, and calls at Truro, St Austell, PLYMOUTH, Reading, and 2010 Paddington.

    thanks for todays news to:

47417, Gob, Riot, Spin, John Turner, Keith Webber.

  • It is currently expected that sometime in the new year, Riviera Trains will purchase 47805, 812, 829, 843, 847 and 848 from Porterbrook. All six are currently on hire to Freightliner and may continue to work trains for Freightliner if the move happens, although being hired from Riviera Trains rather than from Porterbrook. Crewe LNWR currently do most of the maintenance work to these loco's so it is presumed this will continue. Several months ago there had been some disturbing rumours that four of these loco's were to become 57's for Scotrail, which would be a waste of ETH fitted loco's when Brush have been fitting 47/0's with ETH on conversion to 57's.
  • On a related note 47843 (previously avoided by Arriva Trains Wales following two major failures on Rugby days causing hundreds of minutes of delays) managed to complete the trip to Cardiff and back with no major faults yesterday, Riviera/Crewe LNWR/Freightliner/Arriva continuing to dispel the idea that 47s had become unreliable because of their age!
  • Friday and Saturday news added below, other news for last week updated also.
  • 47355 was indeed dead on the rear of last weekends formation to the NRM, with 45112 (not 115! hmm) on the front (updated accordingly below).

    thanks for todays news to:

    news:

  • Not strictly relevant I know, but it answers the reason for the delays last night and provides you with the opportunity to laugh at 57’s and Pendolino’s. 1K78 (853) arrived on time at Crewe but was not allowed to depart until 23 minutes after departure time due to 175108 suffering a total loss of air between Crewe and Chester (at Tattenhall) on 1D83. 1D84 (853) was held at Crewe in case the 175 could only be assisted from the rear. The 175 was fixed by the driver and continued.
57313 on 1D25 had earlier only managed to get to 40mph all the way from Crewe to Rhyl, and was held at Chester for a short time while it was decided what to do with the train. It continued to Rhyl where the Llandudno Junction standby – 57303 worked the train forward. 1R19 0538 Holyhead-Euston was cancelled from Holyhead this morning, presumably the ECS from Holyhead to Crewe last night did not return for 1R19.

    thanks for todays news to:

47417, AJF, D1069, Gob, Riot, Roger Smith, David Wood.

    news:

  • Some interesting dates for the last time the ‘serviceable’ 47’s worked a train:
    47145 – 31/07
    47237 – 27/05
    47703 – 30/09
    47709 – 10/09
    47712 – 21/05
    47802 – 30/06
    47811 – summer
    47832 – 30/09
    47848 – April.
  • Saturdays VST charter from Canterbury to Par is now to be hauled by two Fragonset class 33’s, due to the train using the former Mid Hants Railway green set which can only be worked by Vacuum braked loco’s – and two Vacuum 47’s were not available (I thought 703 and 709 both had Vacuum brakes?. The tour was expected to leave Canterbury at 0443 on Saturday and was originally intended to run to Penzance but due to engineering works it had been changed to Par.
  • A NENTA railtour on Saturday 4th December surprisingly already has its timings in the system and is showing as departing Norwich at 0646 arriving at its destination of Newcastle at 1306, returning at 1647. The tour also stops at York, Durham (although anybody hoping for ‘part fares’ on the East Coast should remember that NENTA have charged £25/£30 for short distance part fares in the past!
  • 47/8 news…
It is expected that Virgins 47/8’s will be returned to Porterbrook in this order: 47828, replaced by 57314. 47816 is next to go, having just been repaired. It will go when 57315 is accepted in to traffic. 47841 will be returned when 57316 enters traffic, and 47830 will go when the exhaust and ‘dellner’ coupler modifications to the 57’s are completed. The remaining four (810, 826, 840, 851) have been fitted with longer electric train supply (ETS) cables to power Pendolino’s when they are at a stand (and can drag them anyway with the ETS turned off).
FGW’s pair, 811 and 815 are both expected to go to two different private operators who will be keeping them on the mainline, it was believed that 811 would be going to Virgin but this will now not happen as 816 was returned to traffic.
  • 1D84 left Crewe 23 minutes late (unknown reason), with 1D25 1655 Euston-Holyhead (57 hauled) leaving Crewe at 1937 (63 minutes earlier than 47853 on 1D84, and the 57 running just 19 minutes late from Crewe). The 57 left Rhyl at 2156 and the 47 left the same station at 2159!!! Somehow the 57 had lost 60 minutes between Chester and Rhyl! Needless to say 1D84 was further delayed and as at 23:20 (when this update was done) it was due to arrive at Holyhead at 2335, 32 minutes behind the 57. 1D84 should arrive there at Holyhead at 2218! 1D25 was just 100 minutes late at Bangor, but would've caught up some time across Anglesey as Virgin usually give their services far too long at the end of their journeys. Although the 47 was just three minutes behind the 57 at Rhyl, time was lost after Llandudno Junction and Bangor due to the long block sections at night time when several of the signal boxes are closed.

    thanks for todays news to:

47417, Blackwater, Gob, Riot, Tim Ward, and others.

    news:

  • In answer to my question on Monday on how 47715 got from Derby to York NRM, it was hauled to York NRM by 45112 on Thursday 11/11/04 in the following formation: 45112+D6700+47715+47355 (355 on rear with engine running to keep air throughout the loco's) and it ran as 0Z59 1000 Derby-York (although nearly an hour late).
47715 unfortunately did not work trains as was planned on the Saturday due to a brake fault. 45112 was for display on the turntable, D6700 was returned to York after Fragonset had repaired its collision damage and 47355 was only on the train so the train crew could return in it to Derby. The loco’s went there as part of the NRM’s ‘Cab-It’ event, and was joined by FGW’s 47815.

    news:

  • Apologies to those awaiting the answer to the ‘guess the location’ photo, it was of 47789 attached to a Preston-Euston drag having replaced 47792 which had failed at BOLTON (I think every email received got the location right!) on Sunday 18th October 2001 (only one person got the date right!) The names of those who got it right will be listed here soon, and some of the wrong guesses.
47815 returned south on Monday afternoon to Old Oak Common alone.

    news:

  • As you will be aware a First Great Western HST was involved in a fatal accident with a vehicle on a level crossing while working the 1735 Paddington-Plymouth on Saturday night. The collision resulted in the very unfortunate loss of life to the driver of the HST and a number of passengers plus the occupants of the car/van. I will not mention any details of the incident as most of it seems to be unconfirmed so far, but I know all of us this weekend will have spared a few thoughts for the lives that have been lost in what was such an unfortunate accident.
  • 47816 has been reinstated (although has yet to leave Willesden). 47811 seems to be a direct replacement for the now off lease 47828, and as a result of a 57 being sent to Dawlish in the near future as a Voyager rescue standby. 816 had been withdrawn to minor fire damage to its battery cases.

    news:

  • Further info about the Preston-Glasgow charter on 27th November has been received, forwarded to me from the 'Morecambe Visitor' newspaper:
"THE LUNE HABITAT CHRISTMAS SHOPPER SPECIAL (Helping to restore the wildlife of the River Lune) Travel from Carnforth to Glasgow in style, also picking up at Preston, Lancaster and Oxenholme."
Organized by Carnforth's WCRC - 01524 732100 (so when they say style one would assume that 57601 is not going to work the tour?! ok I retract that comment seeing as 826 and 810 were hauled south by a 57. Hmm!)
  • 47811 is still in Landore. A mobile crane was used on the morning of the 19th of October to lift in its replcement engine. 811 ended up in the running shed without roof panels because the maintenance shed was full.
  • Re: a comment on Deiniol Williams Railhead North Wales website regarding 839 and a lack of nameplates. It was suggested a while back that Riviera were intending to name the loco. Deiniol's comment that it could be named after something relevant to north Wales isn't too far off the mark as when it was a Virgin loco it was to be named 'RAF Valley' after the Anglesey air base - and reports suggest that the nameplates were cast (by Newton Replica's I think). The loco passes RAF Valley more now than it did as a Virgin loco but the current contract between Riviera and Arriva Trains Wales is thought to be only until Saturday 11th December of this year.

    news:

  • Regarding the story yesterday of the future use of 37408 and 37411 by ATW. This would seem to be a direct result of the 175008 fire (carriage 79708 and not 50708 as previously mentioned) to relieve one class 158 so ATW can provide FNW and FTE with the relevant number of 175's. Ironically 175008 (named Valhalla after the Blackpool Pleasure Beach water based ride, which is named after a heavenly Viking place!) was removed from Preston today by WCRC's 37197 and 37261 to Preston Docks of all places, but the suggested rumours that it was destined for the Atlantic Ocean were confirmed as untrue(!) as a low loader was expected to remove the vehicles.
Anyway, the relevance of all this (yes there is some somewhere!) is that the 37 turn is to start imminently and is in addition to the ATW 47 turn.
  • Regarding a different story yesterday about 47811. Surprisingly it has been confirmed that this loco is to remain under Porterbrook ownership and be used by Virgin before the end of the year as mentioned on www.wnxx.com yesterday.
  • Unusually only two of the current Virgin West Coast 47's are south of Longsight at the moment, with two in Scotland and one on the border! Since the timetable change Virgin West Coast services are not allowed to be dragged by diesel loco's (including 57's) anywhere south of Crewe due to the speeded up Pendolino timetable unless it is to remove a train causing an obstruction. Saturdays and Sundays are a different matter due to engineering works - hence 841 (not 810, sorry) and 816 worked into Euston two Saturdays ago.

  • 47847 + 47805=dead in tow behind 66529 on 4M26 1441 Dagenham-Gresty Lane.

    location/ standby’s this morning:

    news:

  • 47851 hauling 1D25/1R19 was caused by this service being a mk3 set all week vice Pendolino. When this train is a Pendolino the service has to run back ECS to Crewe from Holyhead and back again during the night, as the 57's are not supposed to be switched off - leaving the Pendolino with no power. Rumoured to be because the 57's make too much noise (and not a pleasant noise at that) they are not allowed to stay at Holyhead, thus when on a loco hauled set the 57 can be turned off. More logically it seems that Virgin are quite simply not permitted to stable a 390 there yet. After two nights of 57308 working the train on Monday and Tuesday of last week, 851 worked Wednesday and Thursday, with another 57 hauling the train on Friday night.
Hasn’t anybody thought of refurbishing/rebuilding a 47 to 57 standards, and leaving a reconditioned Sulzer power unit inside?
  • 47810, 47826, 47840 and 47841 have been fitted with longer ETS cables to enable them to connect to a class 390 to test the train supply. These 47’s can power a 390 when standing still, but cannot when under power. 47816 (with a minor electrical fire) and 47828 (with very poor tyres) are now not to be used, although have not been officially stored – still being in the ATSP pool. 47830 and 47851 are expected to be the last two 47’s to be removed from service after 57315 and 57316 are released from Loughborough.
  • 47811 is still expected to move to a charter operator.
  • From Monday 13th December it has been rumoured that the former S+C top'n'tail through working 37's and four carriages will be working a Manchester/Crewe-Cardiff diagram on Mon-Sats. Whether this is in place of the Riviera 47/8's in north Wales or in addition to is not yet known. Adding fuel to the 37 rumour is the fact that the Arriva liveried set with 37408 and 37411 will be working additionals this weekend between Cardiff and Gloucester.
  • Pendolino's have returned to the Holyhead Virgin service this week.
