47816 was seen hauling 47811 (still with First Group logos on) north through Leighton Buzzard at 11:15.
The Codsall-Carlisle trip on Tuesday was cancelled on the morning of the tour due to battery/MA faults on five carriages – faults that Alstom staff at Oxley continually said would be repaired. The central door locking was operational but the external door lock lights on the failed carriages were not working (hence the CDL fault gen that was going around). Carriages are not allowed to leave a maintenance depot with lighting and CDL light faults. Full information for anybody who was booked on the train is on the Compass Tours news page.
66508 passed through Stafford station heading towards the Trent Valley hauling 47847, barrier coaches 6379, 6378 and 47829 idling, at 16:59.

47811, perhaps surprisingly is now in the DFLH Freightliner pool, but still at Old Oak Common. It will be remembered from earlier in the week from news received that only 830 and 841 were expected to join 816 as the latest loco's in the DFLH pool, but it is now thought that 851 is the next loco to leave Virgin!

During the day 47816 has been transferred from ATSP at Willesden to DFLH at Basford Hall, although it is still at Willesden.
TWO more (not three as stated earlier) 47/8's are expected to join it at Freightliner as their 47/8's head off to Riviera shortly, these expected to be firstly 47841 and then 47830.
47805 was seen hauling 365503 south from Ferme Park at approx 1420, possibly to Chart Leacon.
47847 and 47829 arrived at Harringay approx 40mins later, around two hours late due to running via Watford rather than the more normal route via West Hampstead.

47811 is back in use due to 57604 suffering a severe bogie fire at Maidenhead last night on 1C99, which did not arrive at Reading until 0434 this morning! Of note, the 2200 Penzance-Paddington is now 1A40 rather than 1A99, since Monday 13th December.
47841 will be returned to Porterbrook by Virgin within the next few days.

More information regarding the Class 48 Appeal (following the mention on news further down on Sunday), which hopes to source a V type (12LVA24) Sulzer engine from a French loco to fit back in to 47114. The loco is already at Booths but if support can be found then it will be saved, if not it will be cut up in the new year.
The group would like to appeal for any photo’s for use on their website of any former class 48’s (114 to 118 in the years after they entered traffic) and information of when/how the loco’s were re-engined, photographs of ‘Kestrel’ – the experimental loco that was also fitted with a 12LVA24, or the French loco’s fitted with the same engine. Any information from people who worked on them is also requested for use. The group are interested in people willing to buy shares or offer assistance (mechanically) or find a railway for the loco to be based - for what would be a unique loco.
Any interested parties or anyone with information can email myself or visit their website (not yet completed) and contact them through that. 114 is the final of the class 48's in existance that isn't preserved already (in correction to earlier - of course 117 is still around! At the Great Central Railway and has been for some time!) and this is the last opportunity to save it.
Mondays 1H43 0727 Chester-Manchester Piccadilly was terminated at Manchester Oxford Road and ran ECS to Crewe due to ‘stock faults’. The set had returned to Crewe Carriage Shed over the weekend and ventured back to Chester for the 0727, although a late ECS run meant 1H43 began over 20 minutes late (although to be fair everything on Monday morning – the first of the new timetable, appeared to be late!) The stock was a set previously from a charter rake (Intercity liveried 5748, 5792, 5794, 9526) and ventured in to traffic on Saturday – leaving Crewe Carriage Shed and beginning 1D65 with at least two blocked toilets and one locked out of use from a previous weekends charter.
The same set are reported to have begun 1H43 on Monday having been uncleaned from working on Saturday and all toilets having no toilet paper, not good for a train running into England’s second biggest city on a Monday morning rush hour.
Two tone green 854 (of the ex Central Trains 158 variety) worked 1H43 this morning (Tuesday).

The set will return ECS to Crewe Carriage Shed on a Friday night, running back to Chester on the Monday morning.
The above means that no 47’s are scheduled to work to or from Crewe (apart from the ECS move), and Holyhead will no longer have a loco hauled set stabling there at night time.
Crewe Arriva drivers had been driving the run-round at Crewe between 1K57 and 1D65 to keep driver knowledge on class 47’s (the main turn driven by Chester and Holyhead drivers), whether they will now be driving parts of the ECS to continue this knowledge is unknown.
The diagram change was down to a number of things, mostly involving the set being increased from four to six carriages which happened to increase brake force (and decrease excessive wear on the brake pads caused by the 1K57 diagram stopping at an increased number of stations compared to when the turn went to Birmingham in the evening back in March) – leading to complaints from staff who had to walk through the extra carriages and release just a single door at request stops on Anglesey, meaning the guard had to walk the length of the train if the brake van was at the rear. Why walking has become a problem is unclear, surely Valley, Rhosneigr, Ty Croes, Bodorgan and Llanfairpwll existed when a larger number of loco hauled trains roamed the network, and when guards were payed less?
An unfortunate consequence of the extra two coaches lead to slightly slower acceleration (although with two extra coaches the braking points for a station should be LATER than with four coaches), and on a railway where every single minute adds up to expensive delays it was deemed that the ‘loco hauled’ turn could not remain on the 1K57 diagram.
A point for the general public to enjoy for the future though.....Fridays 158(818) on 1D75 1517 Crewe-Holyhead (yes, just two cars), was reported as full and standing from Chester to Bangor, so the guards who don't want to walk as far won't be able to walk at all as there'll be too many passengers in the way.
47854 and 57601 were today involved in a ‘Railtourer’ excursion from Stevenage to Edinburgh and return. The set was seen stabled at Wembley last night.
47769 did receive its test run yesterday, and performed without fault on today’s Santa specials, working top’n’tail with steam loco 76079. 769 worked Ramsbottom-Bury six times, with 079 working the other way.
Surprisingly due to all/most? Midland Mainline staff making themselves unavailable for work tomorrow (Sunday) due to a dispute, Merlin have been approached to provide traincrew and stock for a 5Z59 1300 Derby-Nottingham, 1Z59 1400 Nottingham-St Pancras (calling at Leicester, Kettering, Wellinborough, Bedford, Luton) via Corby and a 1Z59 1830 St Pancras-Derby via Nottingham - and is expected to be hauled by 47355 and 47832 in top'n'tail mode!

769 is expected to be making a test run shortly, before this weekend on the East Lancs Railway to ensure the recurring electrical fault with it has been cured.
The only one of DRS's 47's not in the Crewe area now is 47237!
47826 has gone to Motherwell for attention to dragging brakes, it was occasionally suffering from this on Sundays drags but didn't cause a problem.

Off lease 47811 has moved to Crewe Diesel depot(!) on Friday by 47197.
The ECS from Llandudno Junction last night to Crewe LNWR (carriage shed) terminated at Chester due to a possession on the line, it continued to Crewe today. Due to 839’s failure and 853 still requiring tyre turning, the hauled diagram will be a unit until either loco is ready.
47501 was only on hire from DRS for the ECS to save using Virgin's standby loco, and as 501 was a loco Arriva traincrew would be able to drive. 853 was awaiting tyre turning after wheelflats created by the previously mentioned SPAD incident, which has now been completed and hopefully 853 should be back in traffic later on tomorrow.
47769 was declared a failure at Bury due to an intermittant minor electrical fault on Saturday which has now been located and repaired. 769 will work next Saturday and Sunday on the East Lancs Railway's Santa Specials.

47839 worked 1K57 only due to being in need of an exam, and 853 being unavailable (showing as N/0AX, an unknown code but presumed to still be quarantined under investigation after it was involved in a SPAD at Saltney Junction last Thursday. The loco and stock had been ‘brake blocked’ the day before the incident so it would be expected that the train was not at fault, having run just 600 miles since exam).
