  • 1V50 0840 Glasgow-Penzance was hauled by no less than THREE locos between Glasgow and Preston, where it was terminated! 86258 hauled it from Glasgow and had its pantograph ripped off en route, and was propelled by 66514 to Carlisle.     But today, 1O40 1040 Edinburgh-Brighton was worked by a pair of Class 158's!!!
  • 47817 took over 1S93 1535 Bristol-Preston from 47829 at Birmingham due to problems with the ETH on the coaching stock. 47829 worked 47817s booked train, 1V97 1906 Birmingham-Paddington.
    1S93 was diverted to run via Warrington and the WCML rather than Manchester to catch up some time from the delay at Birmingham.

  • Workings today are unusual, like last week due to engineering works.
  • 47747 has somehow managed to get from Brighton on Thursday, to Penzance this morning without working any known passenger trains! It was at Bristol yesterday afternoon.
  • FGW's 47813 was stabled at Reading for most of the day, presumably to act as a thunderbird in case of HST/loco failure as only two through platforms were available for trains at the station all day.
  • 1O12 0620 Edinburgh-Bournemouth was an HST.
  • 47843 was seen at BNS at 1630. 47757 was at Saltley at 1430.
  • The last 47 to Brighton should have been 47814 on 1O40 today, but due to football 'fans' setting fire to a bin on the train and being violent, the train was terminated at Gatwick. The following morning (Sunday) 1S76 was to start at Haywards Heath, so this means that 47822 on this mornings 1S76 has become the final Class 47 to work out of Brighton on a Virgin passenger train.

  • D1648 or 47851 (whichever you want to call it) didn’t make it onto 1O40 as suggested yesterday, but ran light engine all the way to Brighton yesterday evening!
  • 47747 at Bristol, seen there at 1730, ran light or in service to Penzance at some point today/tonight, to work tomorrow's 1M56. It had come at some point it seems LIGHT from Brighton. 1V50 today terminated at Birmingham, it is not known if any other stock was used to provide a service to cover for it using 747.
  • Following the comment that large logo 47847 could be named Pride of Toton, it has now been rumoured to be being named Railway World (another railway mag name!) Many people have pointed out that 847’s numbers are in the wrong typeface (and the large logo is too thick aswell), and it should be returning to Toton in the near future for its numbers to be corrected. Black headcode boxes to finish off the livery nicely?
  • 47791, which was recently released from repairs at Crewe was transferred to Toton. The loco, which has Highland stag logos and black headcode boxes has been rumoured to be being repainted into Scotrail livery whilst at Toton!

  • Just to confirm that 1S76 and 1O40 run for the final time with 47's this Saturday, before being converted to a Class 220 train on.
    1S93 1516 Birmingham International-Preston had been rumoured to be a pair of 220's on Saturday to get them to Longsight for 1O42 1548 Preston-Brighton on Sunday, but 1O42 is to be a set of hauled stock as far as Birmingham, where it will be swapped for the 'Voyagers'.

  • I mentioned in error yesterday that 47747 was back with Virgin after having returned to EWS. Although it is working with Virgin after a period out of use, it was not returned to EWS, and as mentioned last week the loco was still allocated to Virgin’s ILRA pool although it was not in use at the time.
  • Last night 47839 became the first engine to haul a locomotive hauled passenger train over the Manchester Airport South Curve, whilst top’n’tailing with 47829 on a 158 diagram. See yesterdays workings.

  • 47847 will emerge from Toton either today or tomorrow in large logo blue livery. It was not known until yesterday that this loco had been chosen for the repaint, and is a strange choice - as its Virgin livery was in excellent condition and as 47847 has never carried large logo livery!

  • 47806, which was to be painted in two tone green livery - has become one of the hit-listed loco’s to become 57’s. It is now rumoured that if the green repaint goes ahead, the loco that receives it will be 47851.
  • More bad news: it has been reported that EWS are to order a considerable number of class 66’s to replace the remainder of the 37’s, 47’s, 56’s, 58’s and even a few 60’s by the end of 2002! Evidently, more loco’s with electric train heating will be required if the remaining 37/4’s and 47/7’s are to be replaced.
  • Even more bad news: Alstom – who own 47484 and 47802 are to have these converted to class 57’s.
  • 1O09 0814 MP-Bournemouth is unknown again, although is not a 220.

  • Due to 1D89 (Euston-Holyhead HST) being cancelled at Crewe last night, 1A23 0546 Holyhead-Euston (which would normally have been that HST) has been formed of 47843 and the stock which would normally have worked 1A46 0919 Holyhead-Euston. 1A46 will today start at Crewe.
  • 47747 and 47769 have both left the ILRA Virgin Cross Country Class 47 pool, 47769 joining ex-ILRA 47742 in store, and 47747 which should now work alongside the other Res 47’s as it used to before joining Virgin. 47747 was displayed at the private Crewe International Electric Depot staff open day on Saturday, and is still showing as in the ILRA pool, but no longer on hire to Virgin.
  • 47742 may be returned to service using spares from 47845, although 742 could return to service with EWS rather than Virgin.

  • There were many delays at Liverpool all afternoon and evening due to an incident involving 47770 the previous night, which led to loco’s not sticking to the usual diagrams. 08790 was shunting stock around at Liverpool so the loco that worked in on that particular train could take the same set back out. The most extreme delay noted was 47727 on the 1810 Liverpool-Euston – which didn’t depart until 1956!
  • Also the northbound drags were retimed to depart Crewe between 20 and 40 minutes later than usual as all services were being diverted via Birmingham International, rather than running via Nuneaton as usual. The times quoted in the drags section below are the USUAL times to avoid confusion (hopefully!)
  • 47292 also looked as though it could work one of the drags at one point(!), being on hire to Virgin and stabled at Crewe. It headed light engine southbound at lunchtime to become the thunderbird at Rugby.
  • 47843 on 1S39, and 47818 on 1O08 didn’t stop at Reading as booked, running via Reading West Curve. Other trains may have been similarly affected.
