Optare Excel Bus Sales - buy a low-floor bus...
Welcome,
I'm often contacted by individuals who wish to purchase an Excel, so this page may come in useful if you have an Excel to sell or are looking for vehicles to buy.
Optare Excels have become both a quick-fix and a medium to longer term solution for operators wishing to convert to low floor vehicles to gain new contracts, their second hand value price has reflected this along with their age and the consensus in the bus world of lower reliability in the long term without investment, though the very same can be said about a large number of other types of modern vehicles.
Several fleets have operated large numbers of the type and some have taken to re-engining their Excels with more modern engines, replacing the Cummins 6BT (Euro 2) engine (160bhp on L960/1000/1070 vehicles, 215bhp on an L1150, the Lxxx chassis numbers reflect the length of the bus, an L1150 is 11.5 metres long) with the Cummins ISBe unit which can be found on newer Dennis Dart SLFs. The ISBes come in two varieties, 185hp - a 4 cylinder 4.5 litre version and a 285hp 6 cylinder 6.7 litre variety. Blackpool Transport and East Yorkshire Motor Services have opted for this upgrade and have Excels built in the late 1990s.
Later Series 2 vehicles built as recently as 2003 have a Mercedes power unit and a more modern style of interior.
The Excel was built for PSV use between 1996 and 2003, 'P' and 'R' registered vehicles in the main are not fitted with wheelchair ramps in common with several other types being built at the time.
Optare ceased production and replaced the type with the Optare Tempo, though they have concentrated more on the Optare Solo which also began to appear in longer lengths as a substitute for some of the short Excels.
