Hulme Hall Coaches
A conversation with the very helpful Ian Johnson of Hulme Hall produced the following information regarding the previously mentioned VR running day this coming Saturday (7th October 2006).
The VR’s will run on a duplication of the 379 route, not the actual service, so the best option is to appear at the depot in the morning before 0930 (VR’s running til approximately 1600) to find the first one in use. The depot can be found on the B5094 road, near Gillbent (Stockport) where the B5094 changes from Stanley Road to Grove Lane at the junction with Gill Bent Road.
If arriving by bus you can catch Stagecoach’s 313 service from Stockport Bus Station and stay on until the end of the route at Grove Lane.
A day ticket will be available for the event.
Buses intended to be used are Hulme Hall’s own three (VEX291X, PFC515W, and DPX685W), both of Warrington & District's VR’s (DCA530X and FAO427V), Ian Johnson’s own WTU487W, SELNEC preserved 1408 AJA408L and possibly an example from Johnsons of Hodthorpe’s fleet.

New to Ribble it will return to the North West after a 21 year break later this year.

probably in reversed livery following the common tradition of painting open toppers in coach style livery.

Allocated workings are (and they're pretty much always on them):

0930, 1030, 1130, 1230, 1330, 1430, 1530, 1630, 1730 departures from Ryde on Downs Tour.
683 - 934BDL
683 is the spare VR, and can usually be found replacing 682 (fails a lot more than it should!) It is also allocated as spare for the Needles Tour (the regular vehicles are Olympians).
Order of Excellence! This is the preferred order going from the best to the (very) worst:
504 (drivers all round favourite), then 503, 681, 683, and definitely last 682 (heap!)
Preserved VRs on the Island
NDL490G VRT/SL1/6LX ECW H70F former SVOC 622 Not on the Road
This former SVOC tree-lopper was acquired for preservation in 2000, and has undergone a re-roofing and replacement of upper deck floor. However, the project seems to have stopped and the bus now sits more ore less abandoned in a field!!
(OWNED BY R NEWMAN, RYDE AND OTHERS)
SDL638J VRT/SL2/6LXB ECW H70F former SVOC 628 Not on the Road
This VR was the last Series 2 in the fleet, being withdrawn in 1996 and sold to a local coach operator. It was enhanced during its life with SVOC to include engine, gearbox and other major mechanical components from accident-damaged 508 -RFB 615S – a sort of Series 2 / 3 hybrid! Sold for preservation in 2003, the vehicle has since undergone a full and through restoration and is nearly ready to be finished in Tilling Green (yuk!) livery.
(OWNED BY L ROBERTS, BEMBRIDGE AND M BIRKIN, RYDE)
NDL637M VRT/SL2/6LXB ECW H70F former SVOC 637/SBL 37 Roadworthy
Having left the Island in 1988 to join the Solent Blue Line fleet, the vehicle subsequently passed through a couple of coach operators, then eventually entered preservation in 2003. Painted in SBL 1st version livery, it is often seen attending mainland rallies.
(OWNED BY R NEWMAN, RYDE)
ODL666R VRT/SL3/6LXB ECW H74F former SVOC 666/SBL 106 Roadworthy
After 17 years with SVOC, 666 passed to SBL for 4 years, and then Burgin European (Sheffield) for 4 years. Rescued from a dealer after sitting in a yard for 3 years! A 60mph VR as well! Is still in Burgin white livery, but now carries front grille panel and other bits from BEP 966V, complete with First vinyls still intact! A runner, although currently awaiting some minor engine repairs. Planned to be repainted into SVOC post-privatisation green & cream (it was the first vehicle in the fleet so treated).
